Bonnet ST185 - Fin direction

Hey guys,

I have a standard ST185 Bonnet. (One Scoop in the middle and 2 air vented fins on each side)

I have a little issue with heat soak and I was wondering if I should turn the fins around so that the air flows IN at forward force instead of getting sucked out with the current standard setup.

On a side note I am installing an TMIC Fan to assist with IC Heatsoak, and wondering if raising the bonnet up with washers to help with air flow (Rice yes I know but effective? I am not sure)

The side vents are to let air out otherwise the engine bay will pressurize and no air will flow through. Leave them as intended on this one :)

Lifting the bonnet is another way of allowing air out but the heat-soak you are getting with the top mount is still going to happen when stationary. The best thing you can do is go for a water to air set up from an ST205, lag the charge cooler by adding a reflective insulation to the bottom of it (helps with the heat soak of the cooler) and have the pump run constantly which when fitting to the ST185 is the easiest installation method anyway.

If you lift the bonnet to let air out, you're going to fail Scrutineering at MSNZ events though, as it specifically states that the rear of the bonnet must be closed at the bottom of the screen.

BUGGER! One just sold for $300 on TM :-( Missed out!

I will look into that DEF!!. Just at the moment I will get that IC Fan sorted as I brought a 8" IC Fan and a 14" Front Radiator Fan just to keep the car SUPER cool.

I have washers so I will raise it tonight.

OMG. Heatsoak SUCKS. Stationary I can see MASSIVE heat waves coming out :-( Might need to flush my IC with petrol to clean it as I think its never been cleaned before...

The base of the window/rear of the bonnet is a high pressure zone so it won't let air out at speed.

D1 Mule I know this, but I am getting very bad heat soak at the moment, nothing wrong with a quick fix until I can get the cash for the Water to Air replacement, I don't think it's horry :-S Just using the tools\equipment that I have at the moment :-)

also, look for unnecessary brackets and doo-dahs to remove from behind the front bumper, move your license plate out of the flow, remove the AC condenser/pipework/brackets if you can do without

I got the ST205 intercooler (but no radiator or pump). I can sell it to you with small bosch waterpump and subaru legacy I/C radiator (good enough setup to work well with 195kW at four wheels)..

What kind of work do we need to get setup?

At the moment I have put a TMIC Fan and had my window water sprayer on top of my fan so that water gets pushed around my fan on to the intercooler to cool the IC down when it's at the lights.

I still get bad heatsoak so I think I might get rid of the cat converter and put another radiator fan on the car as it seems to only come on when the car goes in the middle of the dial...

Just some plumbing and wiring the water pump (run it full time and you will be OK). The ST205 intercooler should bolt on in place of the original. You will need a BOV as ST205 intercooler has a outlet for one. I could give you the hoses that I have as well (as I will be redoing them). You will need to mount the radiator, but it is not too difficult. Little bit of bracket fabrication will be involved.

If you get this and CT20b you will come close to the performance of a stock ST205....
