parcel tray removal issues

might sound like a weird question

anyway, im thinking about removing the rear parcel tray in the back of my ae111 levin.

I am wondering if there is going to be any issues with the car. im not too worried about the rigidity from a performance standpoint, more so as wof issues etc.

will i come across any issues with cutting out the parcel tray when it comes to warrent of fitness etc. ? i will probably make a wooden template to put back over it when the time comes to sell it.

a lot of you will probably wonder why the $&#$% im thinking of doing this, its because i want to build a sub box that fires the subs and ports up toward the rear window and seal it off from the trunk, so i have the benefit a hatchback would have with SPL, it also means i can keep my box toward the back of the boot more and have more room in the trunk. so essentially more SPL and more boot space is the plan. i know its an audio question so i thought of putting it in the audio section, however im not worried about the pros and cons of this setup as i can research elsewhere,

im just wondering if there are going to be any wof issues with removing the tray.

Epic WOF fail. That's a structural part of the car, and if you think about where several of your rear seat belt mounts attach, you may start to reason why.

hmm, good point. my seat belt mounts are directly in front of the strut though.

im not talking about removing the entire thing completely, but more so cutting a hole from one speaker mount to the other. ill see if i can get a pic to explain

Yeah, certainly a no go. Just buy big doof doofs if you need more bass. I had two 12's in the boot of my Levin for a short time they went more than hard enough. They did have ~900W going into them though.

I can't recall off the top of my head if you can touch the parcel shelf structure at all (the metal structure that is). I assume not, but read the VIRM online if you want to check.

i had 1000 rms into my last 12 in the levin, had about half the grunt as my friends 400 rms into one 12 in his hatch. although i believe my amp was highly over rated.

hatchback gets like 2-3 times louder on the same gear then the gear would locked up in a trunk,(supposedly - and my friends hatch gets 139.4 on 440 rms so i do believe its true) i was hoping to imitate this effect, however it doesnt seem like its going to work out.

i do have two 6" speaker mounts in the parcel tray and a 6x9" mount bang in the middle, maybe this will be enough holes to get more of the sound into the cabin however i was hoping to seal it off :(

Epic fail for future WOFs.Dont even try cutting the rear shelf as its a major structal part of the car.

The setups I normally advise in sedans is to orientate the subs backwards and fire them into the tailgate and leave some speaker grills over the coverings.

Remove the back seats. They are useless anyway. Memory blank as to whether that was a fail or not, but I don't think it was. Don'y rely on that though.

You can remove the rear seats AND belts if you want.

However unless as mentioned, you feel like going through LVV cert process, leave the parcel tray the hell alone :lol:

My understanding is even Enlarged speaker holes in the rear parcel tray is a wof fail, and expensive to fix if they demand a repair cert

I think its anything within 150mm of seatbelt anchorage points is a no go zone.

annoying considering that hatchbacks and station wagons dont even have a parcel tray, if they do its a cardboard one... but i do understand how they would have to fail cutting a structural piece out of the car

but oh well! dont particularly want to remove my rear seats as i often have passengers and i need to cart stuff around for work.

i would think that if i just removed the cover for it and relied on the two 6" mounts and the 6x9" mount in the middle to get the pressure into the cabin and aiming the subs up, i would get a lot of cancellation from the area of tray around it, so perhaps the typical setup of subs pointing to the back of the car like deecee mentioned will be the go for me.

i think my idea would work great if i was serious into this stuff and was ready to restructure the car and go for a cert etc. but im only looking for more bang for buck/efficiency so clearly not going to suit me :lol:

^What he said. Rear firing usually generates the most cabin gain (or perceived gain anyway).

We can go into boundary loading, but its a bit beyond OP question..

Sedans generally suck for the doof doof. There is a preconception that you have to either visually see the speaker to hear it or you need to direct the soundwaves into a space you occupy.

Fortunately, the physics at play within a car allow you to reflect sound around in the space to good advantage

noooo - well maybe if i get a new car in the near future i will think about it, integras look like they would do the job nicely

I need to check if I still have it, but my ae111 had a custom shelf made that attached to the stock tray without mods

It let me fit a pair of 6x9's without modifying the tray - is that sort of what you are after?
