20v stalling

Postby FLESHAXXE » Fri Jan 04, 2013 11:59 am

Happy New Year to all.
I have a 20v blacktop and each time I stop it stalls the engine. When it gets started it sputters and is not very responsive. It seems like to get it going the engine needs to be reved up .Once it is driving the car revs out just right however as soon as iI come to a stop the car stalls. Plugs have been changed and plug wires. I'm now thinking O2 sensor or map.Im not getting any codes when bridging T1 and TE1.Any suggestions .

Try driving with terminals bridged and see if a code flashes
Could be tps. I assume if you stop while holding revs its ok?
What about idling after you start? If you start it, let it rev then will it idle or die?

If it were the o2 or map sensors you'd expect it to throw a code. Maybe check that the IACV isn't clogged/jammed shut?

Did it just start suddenly doing it, or has it gotten worse over time? Did you change anything on the motor before it started doing it?

I checked the idle control valve to see if it was stuck but it was ok.It's manual. It started about a week ago while going home.I went went hard on the throttle and it hesitated a bit then it took off.I thought that it was the plugs and plug wires so I changed them after it happened a few more times. One morming i got up started the car and as soon as it began to get warm at stalled.I tried restarting and it would not after about five attempts.

Very strange that it isn't throwing an ECU code then. I'd check timing first, blacktop should be around 10º BTDC. Given that it runs fine when cold, I'd check the TPS resistances to make sure its hitting the idle switch when the throttle is closed. Could be a failed water temp sensor overfuelling a warm engine as well but the ECU should throw the related code and it'd blow black smoke.

Have you tried resetting the ECU? Disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes. Take it for a thrash and then check for codes.. if still nothing, disconnect the o2 sensor under the car, take it for a drive and see if it throws the o2 code.. if not, I'd be borrowing another ECU to try.

Regarding timing - make sure you have the TE1 and E1 bridged when you time it.
Blacktop does not use idle switch (even though TPS has it)... So the variable output of the TPS should be 0.5V closed, providing no-one touched the throttle stop.
