Am waiting until any potential crying is out of the way before I put the boot in :P

Yes, defo the starter flick trick! Although last time I did that it snapped the head off the bolt  however that was due to someone fitting the wrong bolt previously

Maybe try filling the cylinder with oil next time, then put the spark plug back in. Much easier to get out, just take the s/plug out and flick the key.

I should note, I am actually joking, please kids dont try this at home

The sand suggestion is GOLD!!!! ha haha.
On a more serious note, good adaption and application of my suggestion, man. do you an air compressor? perhaps hooking up a thin tube to insert into the cylinder, and blast air into it for thirty seconds MAY remove any little debris.

Yeah I forgot to mention that your post in particular got me thinking, I ended up going round supercheap, mitre10 and repco and bought anything that looked like it could help - cost all up about $90, the wife will return $40 worth of stuff i didnt use in the end

Thanks again mate

not having a go but you fed nylon rope into the cylinder to "bind" it up so you could undo the crank-bolt?

that seem like your asking for trouble tbh

He got the job done, I call that a win. If not for a couple of wayward loops of nylon then we wouldn't even be having this conversation, its' just bad luck and lesson learnt. The best way other than using an impact driver IMO is removing the starter and jamming the ring gear.. I've never had the balls to try the key flicking method! lol.

think everyone needs to put a 1/2" breaker bar on the bolt and wedge it into the ground and crank the starter before doing this stuff

havent done that method myself but i wish i had, trying to get those bolts off with a spinning engine is such a c**t... i think i had the sump off and had jammed a shirt between the crank and block last time i got mine off...

at least you didnt get any nuts or bolts in there!

I'd still like to know how it went wrong, too little rope in the cyl, rope too thick, rope sheared off by the plug threads, lots of thick rope & just dumb luck that it tied itself into a knot?

I *think* it was not wide enough... although if it was too wide i would have had trouble pulling it out with a grabber...

so: Possibly not wide enough rope therefore too much put down there.
