Driveshaft knocking

Hi all, I have a knocking coming from the drive train during initial acceleration , only happens at low speeds and is worse when going up hill. No noise once the car is going 25 or if I move off very slowly.

Does this sound like a driveshaft problem? And if so does anyone know a good place in auckland to get it fixed?

Guessing its a RWD going by your sig?

Could be the hanger bearing. Check to see that the rubber mount which supports the bearing is not worn through

Mine, and alot of other A80's Ive driven have a bit of a clunk when the driveline takes up the "slack"

How bad are we talking here?

could be feedback from the diff? My mk3 has it chronic (the diff needs a rebuild)

Also, check the torque on your bolts, usually more of a shudder and constant tho.

It's not just a clank, it is is like a knock knock knock knick knock noise that is coming from the drivetrain. I havent launched the car in anger because of the noise, so I dont know how bad it would be if i did.

Guess it could be the Diff. I did get a torsen center installed in it, but i would have hoped the diff shop set it correctly. How bad is it if the backlash is set incorrectly?

Look/feel at all the U-joints for play or if their bearing cap has turned you'll see the layer of smegma has been disturbed.
Bad U-joint will usually vibrate first, the whole car, progressive with speed.
IT IS NOT diff back-lash!!!!!!! Back lash is only checked to assure that the pinion to ring gear contact patch is going to be the same on the other side of its tooth, where it's when engine braking or in reverse.
Do you know that it's not detonation/pinging you're hearing?
Wheels bolted on OK?
Driveshaft bolted on OK?

Hi all

It is more of a loud rattle that sounds like it is coming from the driveshaft, it is definatly not engine detonation. I will park the car up and have a check of the u-joint and the drive shaft bolts.

Try and get a mate to film a clip with his phone while you initiate the noise, it might help someone identify it quickly for you :)

Hi all

I took the car to a driveshaft place and they think it is the carrier bearing in the driveshaft. Will take the shaft off and take it to them.

Will update if it fixes the problem.

Heigh-ho, everyone

Just realised I didn't up date on what happened, so thought I better in case others have the same problem.

Anyway, the problem was that the Muppet that installed the driveshaft didn't tighten the hanger bolts. Sheesh!"

So they are tight now and no noise.... YAAAAAAAY!

The place that wanted to replace the carrier bearing was beatty's driveshaft center, but in their defence, they just said that they thought the carrier bearing was going after having a quick drive of the car. The problem was at the carrier bearing and I am sure that if I hadnt noticed that it was loose and taken it to them, they wouldnt have done unrequired work

This one is really on me, or maybe one of my fellow muppet friends that didnt torque up the bolts when we put the drive shaft back in after a trans change.

I know its already happened, but in future, when more than one person is working on a car, make sure to take ultimate responsibility for the final spanner check/torque settings, as its way too easy for somebody to forget a few bolts in the mad rush to get in and test drive the thing lol.

You are of course right, in the end it is always up to me to do the final check of things. I wouldnt have got anywhere on the project without the help of my mates.

For sure, mates are what make working on cars fun. I trust my mates, but to be safe, I dont trust anyone to have torqued things down correctly, so always do a final pass to be sure Im not going to lose a wheel down the road lol

Hahah, come on Eddie I had exactly the same issue and symptoms when I only finger tightened my carrier bearing bolts and you gave me hell about for ages. That should have been the first thing you checked!

Pitty I wasn't there for the reassembly as I wouldn't have let that happen a second time and I guess you wont now either lol
