hiace van steering wheel shudder under braking

Postby 92mr2paddy » Sun Jan 20, 2013 9:10 pm

just wana find out what could cause this before i take it to alignment shop/toyota or whatever,

when you brake lightly or hard doesnt matter the steering wheel will shudder lightly, will shudder harder the more downhill your going, like bombays or kaimais is shudders like a b*tch,

the braking isnt affected it seems like it has no problems stopping and it doesnt pull to the side or anything like that, alignment seems ok no odd wear on any of the tires and it doesnt pull to the side.

van isnt lowered and on standy rims, '05 model new shape if that helps, thanks guys

Probably warped discs. Getting them skimmed at a brake shop might fix it otherwise if they're too worn, new discs will be needed. Make sure the wheel nuts are torqued to the correct spec too as that can help stop the warping in the first place.
See ya

I had this on the wifes hilux, shuddering going downhill.

Got the disks skimmed and it got a little bit better but got bad again within a few months.

Then replaced with toyota disks and pads and it's been sweet for months.

When they get skimmed they are made thinner so they become more susceptible to becoming warped.

New thick rotors (especially genuine) should be good for ages.
