What type of Gearbox for a Toyota Corona 1988

Hi Guys, I am new this forum and wanna say Hi to all the Toyota members..
I am currently rebuilding my engine again lol which lasted for a year, the thrust bearings some how come loose and fell out which damaged 2 pistons and the crankshaft, the clutch master cylinder has been leaking for awhile and not sure if that would have caused the problem? maybe not disengaging or something, who knows..

Anyway, I have the engine and gearbox out, engine all stripped apart as I have another block that I will be using which is in better condition plus have a spare good condition crankshaft

I am going to replace the gearbox cause I think its the original which has done something like 400-000kms, yeah its been around lol

The car I have is a Toyota Corona 1988 with a 4S-FI engine, don't see many around as its the single point injection system

Which gearbox from another Toyota I can use, something newer and probably close ratio?

Gearboxes are all new to me and I think my one is a S54?

I will get a replacement from pick a part at some stage cause they are only like 100 bucks and my time removing it

Any help will be most appreciated

Pretty much any Corona/Celica/Curren one will do the job, look to something from a sporty model to get something with close ratios (The likes of SSIII Celica etc)
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting

Thank you for that, once I have rebuild the engine and before I install it in the car I will go and hunt for a gearbox and hopefully this time round things don't go to wrong

Most celicas, coronas etc with fwd manual with an s series motor run an s54 or s55. even the ssIII celicas had s54's

They pop up at pick a partvevery now and again with lsds even. Good brakes on the sporty Celicas too.

I was going to pick one up that came from a Toyota Celica Gen 1. The starter motor was not in its usual place being on the front top and it came off a 8 bolt crankshaft, I didn't buy it as I thought the 8 bolt was different to my 6 bolt, maybe a bigger flywheel and starter motor different location..

Just doing my research so I know what to look out for so when I remove the one from the pick a piece its going to be the right one, still have heaps of stuff to do in the mean time

I think you're the guy on T/me after the mint S53?. It's a 4.2 diff wheras the later S54 etc came mostly with 3.9 diffs.

Yes, the S53 uses a different (smaller) flywheel with an inboard starter. However to mod the box to outboard (Camry) style all that needs doing is drilling 3 holes and using your exsisting flywheel/starter.

I have made a template to do this so let me know if you're still interested

Hi.. Yes I'm the guy, when you say that the S53 uses a smaller flywheel, How would I go about fitting it on? cause my flywheel would be too big to fit into the gearbox, when you say it has an inboard starter, can I use my power wires to connect to it? sorry for sounding dumb Gearboxes are new to me, thank you for letting me know

You'd have to change the flywheel and starter, the wires stay the same and will fit, clutch etc is the same.

I'm going to machine this bellhousing to the later spec, that way it can be used with either setup
