Powdercoating

Postby FST4RD » Mon Feb 11, 2013 3:06 pm

Hey all, going all ratrod on the Starion, taking it back to bare metal.
Someone was telling me there is a clear powdercoat. Would this work and be suitable for all removable parts, ie bonnet, doors, headlight covers, front guards etc
Or is there something better, more durable I should use?
What will suit for the rest of the car, ie roof, rear guards etc that can't be removed? Cause I assume it would be able to be powdercoated?

Yeah thankfully there's no bog. Perhaps I'll skip doing the body parts
Is there a good product out there for this?

there is such a thing as clear powder coat ive used sever times over past few years it requires a lot of prep. I wouldn't be using it on panels personally as they are likely to warp being so thin with the heat of the oven the clear powder depending on brand can need a higher temp and a longer cook time

Why not just clear coat? nice and thick. That way you could keep the rat look without rusting to much?

That sounds like the plan now
Anyone have any recommendations?

Do I just take back to bare metal and then just spray the buggery out of it?

Not sure what's best. But I know some clear coats don't stick to bare metal that well.
Probably want a flat finish to, a gloss clear on a rat might look weird.

You might need to prep it with POR15 metal ready first, which gives it that funky bluey/yellowy streaky colour before clearing it

1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

Ive seen baremetal cleared a few times, but you need to get the right one, otherwise either the clear goes yellowish or the metal rusts underneath, I cant remember which one, looks fugly after about a year anyway.
