Radio Antenna: Removed external one, will this do?

Postby MrOizo » Wed Feb 13, 2013 11:58 pm

Whooaaa i seem to be full of questions this week!

I have removed the electric aerial as it's worn the gears in side and replacements cost ~$300 ex. Japan. Also i have gone with the 'Whale Tail' rear wing which goes over this hole so repairing the stock mechanised antenna isn't really an option.

Would something like this be a better option?

HIDE AWAY ANTENNA / AERIAL

This auction is for a dipole antenna, which will allow you to get AM/FM radio reception through your car or boat radio without and external antenna on your vehicle.

This antenna plugs directly into the back of your radio and then gets stretched out under the dash or somewhere similar.

I would have thought having this in the boot area would be better than having in under the dash?

You dont want it buried under metal in the boot. Under the dash is better as glass and foam block less signal than metal.
Reality: A nasty hallucination that is caused by excess blood in the alcohol stream.

Ok that makes sense. If i go this path then i'll stick to the dash - thanks.

I did think about routing it to be in the hatch - there's some antenna in the glass but i think this is an AM one?

thats an interesting option i hadnt thought of. the electric aerial on the mx5 is bung too and i'd like to bin it entirely, but female likes to listen to the radio.

anyone got any experience on how good the reception is with these things?

I removed the boot aerial from my MR2. (Didn't work) It had an aerial for the factory radio that connected to the front window but I have since replaced it with a new window with no wire in the glass.
The aerial cable that is left is pretty much the same as the photo you show and the radio seems to work pretty good. It's only in the dashboard between the aftermarket head unit and the base of the front window.

Which part is stuffed? I have a semi working mx5 electric aerial unit, just the bottom part of the aerial was bent then broke. I replaced the whole thing with a bendy rubber one from Supercheap.

As long as you are in the city they will be fine,
a piece of wire hanging out of the stereo will work,

but they are not they great for weak stations or out in the country area's.
