How to remove gearbox outer cover?

Postby corona_st170 » Mon Mar 11, 2013 1:03 pm

Hi all..

I have removed all bolts that hold the outer gearbox cover on and just won't come loose, don't want to risk knocking it with a mallet or using something with a sharp flat surface to try and separate the two surfaces and end up breaking something

I suspect my leak is coming from this area and no way of telling where the leak is coming from as I painted the gearbox black at the time I had my engine out for a rebuild, painted black as that's the engine bay theme but not a wise decision as look where I am now..

After 15 min drive, the whole of the passengers wheel area was sprayed full of gearbox oil I can tell its gearbox oil..

Gearbox build up pressure, finds a way through sealant and sprays like a hose pipe all over my freshly sprayed paint and lose of oil

If gearbox builds up pressure then, the breather valve is blocked. It is normally on top of the gearbox, for C series it is right above selector housing.

I assume you want to take the cover off the 5th gear set, then it is held by many 12mm bolts and sealant. Rubber mallet is your friend. Don't jam screwdriver into the gap, as you will scratch the mating surface.

Yes that's the cover I want to remove, will give it a go with a rubber mallet and see what happens, maybe the breather is blocked? Any way to test??

I'm just trying to work out why gearbox oil would be all over the inside wheel?

Thank you for the reply

Shaft not seated properly in the diff, moving out slightly when cornering (enough to break the seal) then oil is pissing out onto spinning shaft and getting thrown everywhere?
Reality: A nasty hallucination that is caused by excess blood in the alcohol stream.

Thanks guys... should have stated what engine... 4S-Fi engine 1800cc I will check it out tomorrow on my day off, would that just be an o-ring?

I replaced the drivers one when I had the drive shaft out but didn't think to the the left sides one, I haven't had any leaks with the gearbox before and after a fresh engine rebuild this happens

Hope I can leave the gearbox in and do the repair, gearboxes are new to me and slowly learning them

If it is that its usually a case of giving it a good bash on the end to click it in properly (you'll hear/feel it click in)

I think my leak is fixed - I hope.. I took a piece of black hose and stuff it into the drain hole and blew some air into it and what you know I hear a hissing sound, I traced it back to the top of the cover just underneath the engine mount, there is a bolt that hadn't been tightened all the way down, having so little room to work with I removed the bolt got some lock tight on the bolt and sent it back home, around the left drive shaft it was all dry so I think the O-ring inside is still holding up

Will post some pictures of the rebuild once I have got some more gearbox oil and that brass ring for the drain plug so she doesn't leak aswell and giving it a real good clean
