Its been a few years so I'm out of the play now, is there still an easy way to figure out what cars are eligible for importation (to be registered on NZ roads)?

It used to be anything after 1996 for frontal impact reasons, then I think it went to 2002 for emissions?

I'm aware of the SIV/20 year stuff, but I'm thinking late model... So is there a cut-off year that makes it easier to figure out what type of cars would it would be possible to import and register?

ie. Anything after 2006, so I can look at vehicles made after 2006 to decide what I like best...

you can bring in anything with a 3 didgit emissions code at the start of the chassis number cba-bp9##### all good, ta-bp9#### no go.

Yah.

Especially if you're importing for countries other than Japan. You can get relatively new cars complied for the Aussie market, that don't meet NZ standards requirements (edited version: they stay with fairly old standards longer than Japan or Europe).

More or less, if you're talking Japan, avoid 1994-2005*

*disclaimer: the 2005 number is just to say if you're looking at 2005-2006 cars, CHECK THE EMISSION STANDARD. Make friends with your local entry certifier, so that you can email them and get an answer as to if the vehicle meets emissions.

Cars that have reached their 20th birthday (so as of today, any car older than May 2nd 1993 production) don't need to meet exhaust emission standards (or frontal impact, but frontal impact isn't really an issue these days anyway, cos emissions is harder to meet).

If the cars are older than 20 years do you have to get one of those special import licence things? That means that the car has to meet a bunch of requirements about being low volume, high performance, 2 door etc?

Not as far as I am aware. SIV allows you to get in a '93-'05 vehicle if it is accepted for those low volume etc reasons, pre '93 you are sweet afaik

Just remember it will cost you ~$4000 in shipping/compliance/rego/gst (and even more for extras like repair cert, lvvm cert, bringing to a standard,etc).

Yeah, this. I looked at importing a car similar to ours, with fees etc it works out to only be slightly less than what you'd pay for a car here, plus you don't get to inspect it or anything beforehand.

They did start making them in 92.... I wonder if the replacement apex seals count as part of the car?

When I was looking at some of the auction sites a few months ago, there was a mint low Ks (26) 1993 manual RZ supra for sale. I am guess one of those or a low Ks turbo JZ147 might be worth a go. But everything else might be a bit expensive once you bring it in. [/quote]

i guess FDs and GTRs are available under SIVs as well. first STi appeared in 1993 didnt it?

maybe its just me, but 25k seems like a lot for an R32. dont get me wrong i love them and all that, but yeah. could get alot of car for that money.

i guess its the collector tax
