Cynos B idle too fast and poor heat output - thermostat ?

Hey all, I've just picked up this little Cynos B as a run about and first thing I noticed is it takes ages to warm up and the idle is ( I assume ) too high - she idles at around 1200-1300 rpm most of the time.
I'm a Toyota novice ( first time owner ) but I have a reasonable amount of mechanical knowledge so I'm thinking maybe the thermostat might be stuck open. Is this common on this age of Toyota and is it easy / cheap to fix ? Thanks !

Quite common on cars that have had little to no servicing. Cheap and easy to replace at least!

Can you give me some pointers on where to get a replacement ( there's a Supercheap Autos near me ? ) and also where it is located on the 5-FHE engine ? Cheers

I'd tend to go to toyota, i've never had any luck with tridon brand thermostats. Get the rubber sealing ring/gasket too.

Follow the hose going to the top of the radiator back to the end of the engine. Thermostat is inside where that hose goes back to. Two bolts to undo IIRC.
Reality: A nasty hallucination that is caused by excess blood in the alcohol stream.

agreed with the go Toyota suggestion ... more than half the time I've gone Repco bits, I've had to replace them again due them not working. Dunno why, it's only a freakin thermostat.

3rd/4th'd for going to Toyota directly. They aren't a lot more expensive, and you should have more success. 2 bolts on the housing at the gearbox end of the head and you're done.

thats not true, i've used those generic gaskets on an old falcon once. and maybe on like a cherokee or something :P

I had a 4E-FE Corolla, which is the same family as your cyno's 5E-FHE, which had a stuck thermostat too.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

I'd get Toyota thermostats IF, I also got Toyota oil, tyres, belts, batteries, filters, bearings, wiper blades and spark plugs.

Toyota thermostats, spark plugs, filters and belts (in some cases) are cheaper than the aftermarket alternatives over here so it makes more sense. And the quality of the thermostats is significantly better than the other options also.

Toyota thermostats are awesome, I've had nothing but problems with Tridon thermostats (3 to be exact, I don't learn quick do I?), I'd rather pay a bit more and do the job once.

Ok thanks mate - turns out my Cynos B has the 5E-FHE engine which is supposed to be the best one in the series isn't it ?

Its the best n/a E series engine, 4e-fte has a bit more power.

5E is the 1500 varient of the E series blocks, "F" is the narrow/economy version of the twin cam head design that Toyota use, "H" is for higher compression version, and "E" defines fuel injection.

Very few Toyota engines get the H tag in their name. And yeah it's the pick of the bunch in the E blocks (without a turbo). Pretty sure the Cynos A only got the 5E-FE, Cynos B got the 5E-FHE.
