Not strictly technical - restoring paint and paint codes ??

Postby markoneswift » Tue Jun 11, 2013 2:30 pm

Hi all, as mentioned in my previous post I have a Cynos B and my question is how can I attempt to restore the paintwork ? It's a 94 model with green ( possibly champagne / yellow / gold ?? ) paintwork that is badly faded in areas such as the roof. I don't know if Toyota used two coat for metallics back then, does anyone have experience of trying to revive the paint on this age of car ? It looks as if the clearcoat has peeled away and it seems to be very common on cars of this age.
My other question is - if I have a crack at touching up the paint myself with an aerosol, how do I find a colour match ( is there a paint code somewhere ) and would the correct paint be available in an aerosol form ? The car is nowhere near perfect so not affraid to try it out ! Thanks

Tag like this somewhere on the car, probably the firewall in the engine bay. 576 is the paint colour code for this car.

that will only give you what Toyota used at time of manufacture.............. it won't look anything like what is on the car now.

If the clear coat has come off, you need to sand off the failed basecoat(yes the basecoat has failed) , then redo the basecoat and clearcoat. For a cheap beater you might not want to bother.

Thanks again guys - a cheap beater is exactly what it is for now, at least. I have discovered, however, that it is the Jap spec Cynos B with the 5E-FHE engine so I'm happy that it's got a well spec'd motor in it. I might just turn it into a project one day......

567 is "Signal Yellow" or sometimes "Super Bright Yellow" (same name as the 576 yellow above strangely enough) .. but i couldn't find that on a cynos, and doesn't sound like what you are describing..

Sounds like you mean
GREENISH YELLOW M.M, 569 aka TOYOTA GREENISH YELLOW PEARL

Yep, that's sounds ( looks ) about right - greenish yellow it is and it's metallic so pearl is right.
