Toyota FWD/MR2 Gearbox Tech - Diff removal

Postby xsspeed » Sat Jun 22, 2013 5:49 pm

I am trying to pull an LSD out of an S54 gearbox, have undone the bellhousing but it appears as though it will only come free so far (unless I am being a pussy with it).

I suspect what needs to happen is, I need to undo the end cover on the gearbox and pull off 5th, before I am able to pull out the remainder of the gearset - is anyone able to confirm this?

The s54 appears to be very similar to the c series just a bit larger so anyone who has played with c52's/c56's might know the answer?

Appreaciate any help,

Cheers

I haven't done an S54 but if it comes apart about 12-15mm, there are either one or two - can't remember - 12mm bolts that you can get to near the bell housing end. Something to do with the reverse gear selector I think. It's a bit of a slow process to get them undone but then no need to remove 5th gear.
See ya

ah yep spotted those and was going to undo, but decided to stop and ask lol

I think I might take off 5th though, as this sw20 s54 is a known good gearset, so might just swap on a fwd case to use the fwd shifters

Wish I had thought of this earlier

Anyone have experience pulling 5th off? what do I need besides gear pullers?

Or you can just not swap anything and use the box as is, no difference in housing between mr2/fwd, you just need to swap selector lever which should be easy as

this was my initial plan, but both the fwd s54's I have, have a smaller diameter 'hump' on them on the fwd selectpr side than the mr2 one.

I will look for more fwd s54's but if I can't find a suitable one I will just swap the case
