Because you're not good enough to make top money?

Preface: I am talking about car mechanics... So here is the deal: in my current field, my current occupation and title, the top money is somewhere around 150-250k (in NZ, it is much higher in Aus) if you work for somebody (not contracting - salary). With my current average pay I earn more than I would ever earn as a really good mechanic working for someone.
Hence I went the way I am now (since I am capable to do what I do as well as being a mechanic). Yes, what I do is a lot more complex and demanding than being a mechanic, but it is much more rewarding and pays really well.

Of course if someone is considering career path of a mechanic, they either need to consider being heavy machinery mechanic (as this is where there is money), or specialize (ie do not fix shitters for quick buck).

As remark about $120 p/h for a mechanic is being too high, this mentality is why we have so many incapable mechanics. I generally do not pay anything to mechanics to do regular repairs and maintenance. I do everything in that regard myself, as I do not trust kiwi mechanics to do a good job. If I have to pay for something is because I do not have right equipment to do the job.

Of course I will be paying someone like Barry (bazda) or Simon (evil_si) to fabricate something for me, but I do not consider them mechanics: they are engineers/artists.

Probably doesn't trust kiwi builders to have done a good job. Can't trust those kiwis, much easier to just bag them while living under someone elses roof.

As for the topic though. I guess the answer is work for yourself as a mechanic if possible. I expected the pay rates for the right people to be quite a bit more than it appears to be.

paying 120 an hour at a dealership doesnt necessarily mean you are getting a better mechanic - the rates the guy actually working on your car gets are about the same anywhere. dealerships obviously are more experienced with the brand they work on, and probably better supported in terms of workshop manuals / factory backing etc but the guys themselves all come out of the same qualifications. the 120 ph mostly goes to pay for the fancy coffee machine in the waiting room, and the dozens of bureaucrats in the offices dreaming up more things to charge you for :P

it does depend on the vehicle too though. anyone can change the sparkplugs on a 95 toyota corolla.

I live in house owned by my parents. I am awaiting for market crash to buy the house, as I am not paying to 3rd party for rent (although I pay reasonable amount to parents).

As for the mechanic, the best way to earn real money (apart getting into heavy industry) is to work for your self.

And yes, paying 120p/h at dealership means nothing.
I'm pretty sure there are good mechanics out there (eg. I had good experience with Subtech), but they are very rare. Most of them are part changers at best.

I'm not convinced that owning your own general workshop is as lucrative as people think tbh. Specialised places (HVAC, Auto Electric, EFI, motorsport etc) can be profitable with the right business model but general servicing and WOF....doubt it.

But that all depends on what your interpretation of 'real money' is.

Market to crash?

Demand > supply means there will be no crash. Basic economics.

I'm sure there will be a lot of mortgagee sales in a few years when interest rates hit 8% but until then with Auckland still growing and f all houses being built it will still increase for a while yet.

I only get off when you post, so keep up the good work. :P In all seriousness though, I can't work out what part upset you. The thread has a few tangents from the OP, but on a whole isn't that bad for "the internet". On the flipside, OP is getting good coverage as the thread is staying near the top.

FWIW, I think if someone in Tauranga has a suitable job going, they will likely PM YeMs in any case.

Then they can both have suitable jobs going and no one to apply for them :p

there were a few mortgagee sales during the GFC, but all it really meant was the rate of price growth slowed for a couple of years.

I completely agree with rollaholic; I have no issue paying someone $100 p/h to diagnose and / or repair my car if they have the right tools and can do it quicker & better than the mechanic down the road who charges $60 p/h and replaces everything until it's fixed.

But what annoy's me is paying someone $100 p/h for these expertise, only for them to throw their apprentice on it. Nearly every other industry charge out rates are variable and based on experience.

My mate owns a workshop and he's struggling (mechanic / auto-sparky). He lives in a low income part of Auckland and reckons he can't compete a row of with unqualified 'mechanics' down the road, who don't have correct diagnostic tools and do most of their work cash (albeit he picks up a fair bit of work from their mistakes).

I've always tried to get to know my mechanics (bring beers after work helps) and I generally get looked after quite well. I also try to diagnose what I can (usually by posting here) so I can tell them what I want done and not get the run-around.

Sweet not just me. I had to re read the thread a few times  if anything this is one of the more civil topics on here.

When i read over it looks to me like some are taking the piss out of sergei. Cant say i know him tho he is probably abit peeved. Comments like Because you are not good enough to make top money? or calling him a rich guy? Seems quite rude to me, i cant picture any of you saying it in person to someone or him so why say it behind your keyboard? Probably is one of the more tame topics but i dont care for pricks
