Tech query - engine / gearbox replacements - suppliers ?

OK so it's not strictly a tech enquiry, but I'm trying to get an idea of where I go in the Waikato region should the worst happen and I need either a gearbox or engine replacement. I'm doing a lot of Kms in my Cynos B at the moment and in the event of something major blowing up, I need to know who I can go to, where they are and how much it's likely to cost !

I'm thinking along the lines of rought costs for obtaining a 5E-FHE or similar, fitting and timescales and also the auto box as used in the Cynos. Any recommendations gratefully received - I'd rather have an idea in advance I can't do stuff like go to pick-a-part and get an engine / box myself as I don't have that much skill / space / time. Personaly given the lemon like nature that the cars given you it might be easyer/cheaper/nicer that if it goes pop trade it/scrap it and buy something else. Engine change wont be cheap at most shops, could be done via someone on here if the have time/spaceto help.

Trade it / scrap it would be me ideal option yes, but sadly I'm already paying finance for the 'best' car which sits on the driveway all week. The Cynos is just my work runner and I only paid $1500 for it. My savings are zero, so really my only option if it does go pop is to try and fix it for now. Hence the enquiry

and I don't really think it's been too much of a 'lemon' to be honest. Sure it's had issues but they've been relatively straight forward to remedy and are only things that would be expected of a twenty year old car with a less than perfect ( in fact, non-existant ) service record. It's hasn't let me down anywhere and continues to run great, I'm just trying to have a backup plan if the worst happens Cheers

Thats all good. The usual triangle exsists for any work; cheap/good/fast, pick two. If you dont mind using the good car while the dailys in the shop you should be fine. Back to parts, wouldnt think a 5E would set you back too much and changing engine like for like might cost you $100 and a few beers if you talk to the right person.

Sweet as mate - I'll be sure to enquire on here first before making any rush decisions ! Fingers crossed she'll be right until at least I'm working nearer home, then it won't be so much of a concern because I can catch a bus. The wife gets to use the good car, when she needs it. Typical eh ?

I would hazard a guess most workshops would charge you a day's labour to do an engine swap if they were the same engine/trans, so probably a grand or so.

Seriously, blow an engine you can't replace yourself -
BIN THE CAR, BURN IT, SELL IT FOR SCRAP.
Do NOT pay someone to do that amount of work for you on a stuffed old shitty daily.

so learn how to do an easy swap with supplied motor.........or buy a bus pass ??

Best way to learn is to do-it-yourself and it will save you a fortune.

Everyone knows someone mechanically minded, use them as your saftey net for backup, buy a manual and sort it yourself.
The beauty of older cars, except for catastrophic failures you can usually cokes them home, you have a substitute car which releaves the pressure of the need to fix before Monday morning which is always a bonus.

not 100% sure if he is still doing it, but the user called 'strx7' on here used to work at / run a partsworld. its been a while but i think he was in the waikato. was always great to deal with and willing to ship anywhere.

If you can afford the time off the road, sure have a go yourself with the help of someone mechanically minded. But paying retail prices for the engine and fitting it is going to cost you way more than the car is worth, even buying the engine is probably going to be a fair chunk of the value of the whole car.
If it does die and you can't do the swap yourself go buy another car.

OK well thanks everyone. Some helpful and not-so-helpful suggestions supplied so cheers for those. On the issue of doing it myself, no I cannot do that - I am capable of doing it yes, but I have no tools, no time and no facilites ( I live in a rented house and cannot get one drop of oil near the place ). Hence my original enquiry about costs of getting it done by a workshop or you friendly neighbourhood spanner wielder. Anyway, the point is probably mute now as I'm about to take up a new job only ten minutes from home, so if the bugger breaks down and I can push it to work ( or walk ).
