Gearbox ID?

Postby MilfHunter » Tue Jul 23, 2013 3:33 pm

These boxes came up recently and the owners are claiming they are Celica/Celica GT4 items, but I don't believe them

1st has the starter on the exhaust side, looks like an "E" series box.
It's definitely not a Celica S53 box
Is this from a 4A-GZE?

2nd has the starter behind the motor and looks similar to the Celica "E" but I suspect maybe from a Corolla 4x4?

That toyodiy link shows the starter motor location in a different spot to Milfhunters top image.

GT4 starter motors are located on the front of the motor, gearbox side. The bottom one is definitely not a GT4

my guesstimates are that the top one is a 3S gearbox probably St202 or similar, defintily E series box, and the bell housing patten appears to have the engine on a backwards slope, and starter location is correct

the 2nd one looks like ae104 or ae95 4wd corolla/carib with lockable centre diff.

Thanks for the feedback
That pic of the converted box (satans child) actually now belongs to me and is in pieces downstairs. It's a 185 RC box (3.9) fitted with an MR2 LSD and cover plate. On inspection I found cracks in the pinions and munted synchro's

What I know about the 1st box. It now belongs to a mate in Sydney and was sold to him as a Beams box.
It has a KAAZ LSD fitted, which suggests that it wasn't stock LSD.
I've asked him to to test fit it to a 3S block, but his spare block is at the shop and his gearbox mac want's $4k to put this one back together.

The starter is definitely on the wrong side, apart from the S53 I don't know of another box with that arrangement

Here's the internals of the 1st box

I'll try get a pic of the other side so you can see the starter hole is blanked off

Thanks for the feedback guys

Turns out my friend was mistaken, new pic of the stripped box shows it's a converted ST165 unit with a MR2 Kaaz 1.5 diff fitted
