Airbag detonator disposal???

Postby Mr Ree » Thu Aug 29, 2013 1:37 pm

Hi guys,
I have a few detonators from steering wheels, sitting in my office at the moment as want to throw them out, but wasnt sure if there was any specific requirements given they are essentially an explosive.

If anyone has any info, or wants some free bombs (jks), please let me know :)

Hook them to a battery, send them on their way. Bit of a non event to be honest.

Ignoring the potential legal side of things. I'd just pop them off somewhere remote, with long leads

Or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iS-62rL6Dh0

Though i'm guessing you lack bags, so it will result in no win.

See if the fire boys want them for demos or something, they seem to enjoy taking old cars to test the jaws of life on.

Scott, I have 8 if you want them?

BZG, you're right, I have no bags (well none Im willing to sacrifice)

Shane, great suggestion :) As of the A80 isnt rare enough already, I could wipe out the entire collection in the 04 in a one fell swoop.

Alex, interesting suggestion. But I only have the steel detonator part, not the entire airbag unit.

Thanks guys

If you dispose of them without setting them off then they're classed an an explosive and you'd likely be paying someone to take them away. If you set them off then they're just everyday rubbish.

As Alex says, someone may want them for displays. We had half a dozen that got given to a car show down here for educating people about crash stuff and setting them off.

pretty sure you have a pretty reasonable sized garden/lawn, next time you want to dig a hole, plant a couple of them where you want the hole and discharge them, if hole isn't big enough, add more and try again, if hole is way to big, only use one next time you need a hole.....

playing with aigbags is fun, set off one in a small pond at work oneday haha.

The last one we let off was at work. Lay a tyre down on its side and put the airbag in the middle so that it couldn't go anywhere. Theory being that there would be a bang and the tyre would contain it. There is a very clear tread mark on one of the main support beams above one of the hoists still.

It's heaps of fun!!

Was up at our local wreckers when they were setting them off. They decided to put a spacesaver on top of one. Sure enough, 10m into the air it went and the spacesaver landed through a windscreen of a car they were wrecking

Otherwise, see if the local mechanic training group wants em.

It seems like we have a solid group of budding explosive technicians here, so somebody is welcome to them :)

Dont really feel like having to explain to the landlord why the AOS smashed his front door in, after receiving reports of Al Queda training camps in the hills of the south coast lol

Or just bypass all that hassle and drop them at your local cop shop.

Hmmm, I hadnt thought of that.

I couldnt see the Police wanting to be a disposal outlet for anything like that, but I guess it couldnt hurt to ask.

Well, they take old ammunition etc.. can't see why they wouldn't take a few detonators. Gives the bomb disposal guys good practice! :)

Could always gift them to a local Polytech, I'm sure the automotive guys could use them.
