Caldina fuel usage

My workmate recently acquired a 3SFE 4WD Caldina (ST195 I think?).

He mentioned that its' a little heavy on gas.. driven nearly 260km and used 3/4 tank! So say the gauge is relatively linear and it has used around 35L (assuming the tank is 50L), thats' nearly 14L/100km.. or V8 Discovery sort of mileage. I understand that being a heavier, underpowered 4WD its' not going to have exceptional economy.. I know a few people own these cars here, what sort of economy should he expect?

I've given him instructions on how to pull codes, as I think the O2 sensor is possible shot.. any other ideas?

What sort of driving? Is it auto? serviced regularly? I wouldn't expect a huge amount better than that if its auto and mostly running around town.

Replacing driveline oils and a good engine service (plugs and leads, possibly even coil, air filter(!) and fuel filter on top of normal engine service) should put it in a good mood if these haven't been done recently. They're almost always overlooked and can have a noticeable impact on economy (and performance)

Nah he's an older fella, it certainly doesn't get thrashed. Yeah its' auto. I think he may have already serviced it as well. Maybe thats' just what it is then?

Same economy as my old mans v8 Calais. He won't know how much fuel hes used until he fills up again so its best not to worry about the gauge too much.

My 4wd auto 3s (rav) gets around 18L/100km in town ~11L/100km open road. Half my driving is warming up, which is not good for it, but beats walking. Also always have it in "power" mode and usually with the AC going. I like to think of it as the perfect combo for max fuel usage.

Sure do lol. After two years I got sick of the shit roads in a modified car. Gets me to work and back which funds other things. All I need is a rainbow spare wheel cover and i'll be sorted. Should have just flicked it and got a shitbox, but even those are $$$ these days.

also this, fuel gauges are a guess at best. i had a civic that would happily do another 100km with the needle buried on E before the light even came on.

Just an update to this, the O2 sensor was replaced, no more codes but it still chews through the gas! Just a thirsty car.

A guy at work had a 4wd auto Caldina and yeah, fuel economy seemed to be decidedly average.
