+1 for fuel pump or other issue,
When you turn the key on can you hear the pump run for a second or two then stop??

My old 190e did that. Some starting issues and then randomly died when I was driving it. Turned out to be a dead fuel pump.

+1 having a listen to see if the fuel pump is running.

Cam belt missing some teeth - cam timing out so can give similar symptoms
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Funny you say that...

I've had starting problems with it recently as in it's like battery is flat n winds slowly, but if I persist or leave it for a bit, it roars into life

Weird

Will check pump later on today

Try the ECU temperature sensor.

My AE101 levin did the same thing. Found by disconnecting the temp sensor and it started. Didnt run well till it was replaced, but it ran well enough to get it to the workshop.

There were no fault codes for this. It was trial and error by disconnecting vital sensors and getting the codes to make sure all was well with the system.

Turned the car to on and dead silent, no priming sound at all

It wont prime unless you crank it over.
Check voltage to pump while cranking or run return line from fuel rail into a container

Ok I'm really lost on this car now n it's irking me somewhat...

Is anyone in south Auckland that can come n do a diagnosis so I know where to start to getting it running again...car is a daily n life sucks without wheels

Not true for most (maybe all?) vehicles I've worked on.

Usually key to on/run position will prime the fuel pump for a second or two giving a very distinctive whirring noise. Then stop. If the key is in the start position the pump will run, and if the car is running with key in the on/run position, obviously the pump runs.

nar stu is right, alot of toyota's dont prime till you crank engine. smallport 4age definitely doesn't. unsure about bluetop

16v 4ages are def the way I explained it - fuel pump triggers from cylinder sync

have you tried what stu said about checking fuel pump voltage, and that fuel is coming out the return line?

if you dont feel confident with it i could possibly come and give you a hand

Haven't yet done what stu recommended, just got the car home last night n started back at work...any help would be really appreciated thank you

Pull the spark plugs out and give them a clean or just replace them.

Otherwise as the other guys have said, sounds like TPS / Map / Fuel supply.

Pulling the return line off the end of the fuel rail and putting it into a container is fairly easy - shouldn't be hard to access and is just a clip to undo. Just make sure its the small line after the regulator you pull off, not the bigger line :wink:

If fuel is coming out there, I would be checking the vacuum lines to the MAP sensor, and the TPS settings are within spec.
