gearbox swap minor issues; drive shaft, 24mm socket please?

Hi,

I just finished my first gearbox swap! I put a c56 LSD in for my C52. Pretty much all sorted but a few minor issues.

1, The passenger side driveshaft does not want to go all the way in. The splines are lined up, have tried hitting gently with a hammer withough success. i do not have the right size socket for the hub so it was installed while still connected to the hub.

2. anyone in christchurch have the right sized socket for the gearbox oil fill plug? tried an adjustable spanner but it started rounding the head of the plug

I'll see what I got tomorrow after work. Can't get to garage till then.

Take some photos of the bolts you're looking to replace with some measurements. Might have something lying around.

looks about 24mm (just using a ruler) confirming what 'thegreatestben' said.

Just eyeballing with a ruler, they look M9. The matching splines on the crossmember are smoothed out I think so I will just get some standard bolts to replace them. Makes it a lot easier for next time because I can insert the bolt from the bottom (getting the factory bolts in is very fiddly around the crossmember and engine mount).

Any ideas on the driveshaft? driver's side went in easy by the way.

Yeah probably best to just get a couple of high tensile bolts to replace those as you say.

Is the car still jacked up? I haven't touched a FWD gearbox in ages. But if it's not on the ground, it may get pushed in when you lower the car back on to the wheels. Someone else might have a better idea on what it is though.

Do you have a 1/2" powerbar at all? I should have a 24mm 12 point socket easy enough. But will have to check if I have a 6 point (better) 24mm socket tomorrow. Both will be 1/2".

Yea, still jacked up, I will install those new bolts and then drop it down to see if the driveshaft pops in.

No sure what you mean by powerball? I have a 1/2" rachet if that is what you mean.

Power bar should be used for undoing the tight stuff. Ratchet will work if it's not too tight and you have a good one. Otherwise it would be a good investment for the tool box.

Ok, my mate's one that I use has done the trick for other tight stuff - its about 50cm long so you can get some decent torque on it.

Yea I need to invest in some tools and jacks etc. This is my first car so I havent really needed my own set. I recently got a decent air compressor so I'm looking at air tools as well.

not sure if on topic or not but you should get something like this set. yea you can buy a 3/8 kit for a lot less but IMHO a kit like that is a good investment (and be careful lending tools)

and get a 1/2" breaker from supercheap, mine was about $20

from there just get the other more specific tools as you need them (ball joint splitters and the like)

air tools are great but IMHO unless you have air hoses hooked up around a garage so you dont have to pull the air compressor out and set it up every time it pays to have a decent normal set first

Cheers jacobrjett, Ill stop by supercheap on the weekend. Yea I'm not needing the air tools asap so I will wait to see if a good deal pops up. I mainly bought the compressor so I can paint my car.

Yes!!!! super stoked. Dropped the car down, gave it a few taps and in it went!

Still need a 24mm socket though. I did not fully drain the gearbox oil, the only stuff that came out was through the driveshaft holes (about 1 litre). Would the remaining oil be sufficient to drive a short distance? (ie. to drive BZGBling's (or anyones??) house to borrow a 24mm socket)

Just read that the filler plug is actually 15/16ths and that 24mm is just a wee bit too big.

Once you're getting up to those sorts of sizes, it doesn't really matter. Generally Japanese stuff is metric so you could put it the other way and say that the plug is 24mm and 15/16 in too small. Either way, there is enough tolerance that they're interchangeable. 15/16 = 23.8125mm

Most stuff for diff and gearbox plugs will either be 3/8 or 1/2" square drive, 17 or 19mm, or 24mm. Unless you're looking at Fords, in which case you're more likely to strike 23mm stuff quite often.

24mm worked fine (6pt), 0.2mm either way is pretty tiny.
