HKS BOV Failure - Taiwan knockoff

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Sun Nov 10, 2013 3:45 pm

I've been running a knockoff HKS SSQ style BOV for a number of years.

Yesterday on my way up a hill at 15psi something let go, heard the BOV vent and lost all boost. Car still drives perfectly fine, but won't build boost almost as if it is venting constantly. I'm assuming the BOV has let go, as the wastegate (factory setup) is closed shut, can hear the turbo spinning and trying to spool etc.

Now I've pulled it apart and can't see anything obviously broken, all the seals etc seem fine. Probably is I've never disassembled one before, so something may have dropped away and I can't tell its missing.

So is there anything that "usually" would let go on these? Next thing is I'm slightly concerned if something has come off the BOV, where it went. Engine still drives / idles / sounds fine though...

Cheers
-Matt

either the seal has gone or the spring has lost tension, BOV's are pretty basic things

No, and I just realised this 10 minutes ago... after my girlfriend said "its not your intercooler piping is it?"

Hahahaha.

Edit - so yeah... its only the second most obvious intercooler joiner in the engine bay... ah well, I know exactly how a BOV works now.

I had this issue a while back, except I could still get it up to 5psi. Had me $&#$% for ages!

I had one of the hks Ssqv`s a few back. I liked the design of it.the two pistons get pulled against boost. So it seemed that they wernt as likely to lead on boost as the pressure would push it close. Where as it was the opposite with the generic Bov design where they could be blown open if spring tension was to soft.
So unless something is obviously missing or broken I might not be the bov. block it off and then run the car without it. Could help pin point the problem.
