4AGE 16V Smallport with turbo... good move ??

Postby jondee86 » Sat Nov 16, 2013 1:40 pm

I have a complete unopened low kms smallport longblock. Been
thinking that a simple turbo install and dropping it in the AE86
might be a bit of humour :) Not looking for any big numbers, just
enough to increase the fun factor.

Don't want to dump a lot of money into it... maybe one of those
cast iron top mount manifolds from TM if they work. Good second
hand small late model turbo (if such a thing exists) preferably with
internal waste gate to keep things simple. Front mount etc. I
already have a smallport intake manifold converted to RWD and
programmable engine management.

So the question is... who has done high comp turbo, and how did it
work out ? How was the driveability ? Any maintenance problems ?

Cheers... jondee86

10psi and good tune and 98 it will work well.

those cast manifolds don't seem to be that great for making power. but if you must, i have one here thats never been used. you can have it for half what ever they are new.

ran my ae85 with my na bottom end for awhile. was limited to about 10psi on 98. went good. engine was a smallport with 11.5:1 compression

sounds pretty much what tarran has done. he organises the S-club 'joe manji' drift days.
smallport, cast manif, t28 and a link. looks like alot of fun for a budget turbo conversion

im looking at turboing my unopened 270km smallport with a megasquirt ecu so i am interested to hear how you get along

(am thinking of putting a slightly larger then needed front mount on, and running an oil cooler under the gtz hood scoop on my levin to fight heat/detonation)

What version MS? hoping your buying it from http://www.diyautotune.com/ and not some muppet on TM who sells the old boards

Go for the MS3X or MS pro :P (budget wise get the MS3 and then add the X etc later)

Get a wide band 02 sensor as well

Who is tuning it?
Why dream it when you can live it

Ill be tuning it I guess? i thought that was the idea with megasquirt

I was looking at this one
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 231149.htm

but I will spend more time looking into whats good and whats not when im ready to buy it, im just paying for the manifold turbo and wastegate now and then I will get some injectors and intake stuff and the ECU

ill PM you shrike to avoid cluttering this thread

Having looked into this a bit more, I think rather than go high comp turbo,
I would go the latter... open it up, bearing, rings, ZE pistons and a proper
(more efficient) tube intake manifold.

I'm inclined to think that there is more margin for error on a low comp turbo,
and (correct me if I'm totally wrong on this) that there is a better choice of
OEM turbo's that will run 12-15 psi efficiently (yes, I'm big on efficiency !!).

But before I go there I'm on a mission to get this N/A stuff sorted :)
