Given the fine for driving at 54 would be $30, you'd have to get caught many many times to warrant a detector. So claiming that's why you need one is a bit of a stretch.
Anyway, more car to do stuff. Listing two on the tard today. Most people are against trademe, but I get more messed around by people on forums than trademe when it comes to selling things

It's not the fines you have to worry about, it's the demerit points that come with it. I'm sure you know how easy it is to exceed the speed limit on a passing lane.

Wasn't a factory option for any of the Japanese AE100/AE101 Corollas. It was an option in America for the autos however, but never in Japan.

Funnily enough the speedos in both of my Corollas are bang on. I check them regularly against the GPS and it's not out by a single kph. The circumference of the wheels/tyres are the equivalent of the stock set-up, so the speedo is unaffected and haven't seem to have lost their calibration over the years.

I've never driven anything that had a speedo that reads accurately on standard tyres sizes, even the newest rental cars all read at least 4kph too high at 100 according to my GPS.
Mr2 seems to be bang on @ 100, but isn't on standard sized rims.

Yeah a friend of my parents bought a brand new Honda Civic from the dealership a couple of years ago and when we checked it against the GPS at 100kph the speedo was reading 7kph higher than we were actually doing. So the digital speedo was saying we were doing 107kph, meaning at 100kph on the speedo we'd only be doing 93kph. No wonder I come across so many slow bastards in the 'fast lane' in late model cars - They probably don't even realise they're going slower than they think they are
. I've also heard of a lot of other newer cars like that though. I'm pretty sure the manufacturers do it on purpose.

You should find its not 7km/h over at all speeds, if you think you've got the old mans civic tapped out at 180 in reality it's probably closer to 160. Likewise at 40km/h it should be close to 1-2km/h over what the GPS says.
Depending on the GPS unit they are also not 100% accurate, however in theory the faster you go the more accurate they are as they are probably estimating speed at 10m intervals - does my science meke sense?
You're young and have an abundance of spare time, go test this theory and report back. I'm expecting pics.
