ae101 4age silvertop auto intermittent issue...

Postby h8wrxs » Tue Mar 18, 2014 11:59 pm

my sister has an ae101 trueno (auto ewww)

its started to crap out a few days ago, the motor just dies all of a sudden for no aparent reason

it does it when the engine is hot and cold so that doesnt help me narrow it down

every time ive tested it it seems to have spark on all the plugs

ive spoken to one of my mates whos an auto sparky, he has narrowed it down to either being a faulty ecu, or a faulty pickup in the dizzy,

he's tested the dizzy at work for me but sitting on the bench it tested fine? but when attached to a running motor im wondering if that would be different

basically im asking are either the distributor/cap or ecu a common problem on 4ages? ive had a few truenos/levins and ive never heard of either being a problem or come across it before?

thanks
The four seasons in Australia consist of "$&#$% it's hot", "Can you believe how $&#$% hot it is?", "I won't be in today because it is too $&#$% hot" and "Yes, the dinner plate size spiders come inside to escape from the heat."

check if you have fault codes in the ECU. if a faulty ECU, check for leaking capacitors inside(due to old age).
check the fuel pump as well including circuit opening relay.

Ecu is a reasonably common problem, ive had two that developed dodgy ECUs. Pull the cover off and look for leaky or swollen caps.

So you need to see what your loosing when it stops.

Start with fault codes, do you have eng check lamp key on engine off?. Direction, do you have fuel pressure, ignition?

Start there first.

Pretty sure that no codes show when the ecu is failing
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

ECU's are super common to fail.
Sometimes they bring up fault codes that don't exist,
sometimes they don't bring up any codes,
and sometimes the Check light doesn't even come on.

I would say the ECU is more likely to be faulty than the sensor inside the dist by a long way.

Reason i asked if there was a check lamp with key on.
have come across this on a few occasions and ended up being ecu, and yeah one had no codes but was buggered.

cheers for your tips the other day

it was showing no fault codes

it ended up being a blown capacitor on the ecu which was an easy fix
