Having had that happen, a big factor is the weight of the tow vehicle. Get a proper one and obey the factory tow limits from the manufacturer. I would never go over 1400-1500kg vehicle weight on a single axle trailer and you definitely need brakes. No personal experience but mates with caravans really rate electric over hydraulic override. Tow vehicle heavier than what you are towing is a nice to have feature, NZTA guidelines (that manufacturers ratings potentially over-rule) are 1.5 time weight for braked and 0.75 for un-braked.
