Powersteering conversion 80s series toyotas

Postby XSVWGN » Wed May 07, 2014 5:53 pm

Hey guys,

So some of you will know I want to put a powersteering setup into my corona and I was wondering what 80s series toyotas have powersteering and share the same 4bolt crossmember setup? A bit of playing around will be had to get all the suspension geometry correct for cert purposes. I was looking into possibly a tt141 corona rack, crossmember setup?

What are people's thoughts?

Try searching ToyoDIY for the part number. See if your cross member (part number) has been used in other Toyotas.

The crossmembers are all different with different engine mounts, steering racks, powersteering racks etc. mine currently runs a horrible steering box setup and I have a funny feeling that the dump pipe off the turbo will foul on the steering box.

Post up some measurements of the crossmember in your car, including the LCA mount points. I have KE70 (same as AE86) and TA63 crossmembers I can check for you. You are likely to find it is easier to mount a rack to your current crossmember, or have a dig through http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/forum.php to see if there are any similar conversions done there.

Thanks Callum. I will be working on the car this weekend so I will get the measurements etc and post them up and see what we can do. There must be a rack setup out there that will bolt straight up like Toyota Lego.

Crossmember lego is not that easy unfortunately, normally lots of cutting and welding needed. If you look up Sheepers RA28 on Oldschool you can see what it took to get an *E70 (might have been *E86?) rack into that, which is actually a reasonably common conversion. I got really lucky with my TA63 to KP Starlet swap by just slotting the holes but it did push the track out 100mm+ each side.

Ok yea I will have a look. Sheepers has some cook cars that's for sure. I have a feeling that I will be able to do a similar swap to you. Well that's what I'm hoping anyway. Slotting the holes sounds like a fantastic option if it is possible!

My experience with xA6x carina (same chassis as xT14x corona)
Various xT14x coronas came with either rack and pinion or steering box setups
Maybe something similar with the xT13x series - maybe look at the earlier celicas
Also
Maybe a crossmember and steering rack from later corona will bolt up
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!
