4afe won't idle

Postby KinLoud » Wed May 14, 2014 3:33 pm

Before I pull stuff apart to start fixing I though I'd ask for the top 3 reasons why it won't idle

It was ok driving home last night.
Moved car out of carport this morning (about 15 seconds engine running)
Was heading off to town about 1 hour later - won't idle.
Drives fine but will die as soon as I let it idle

Thanks
Ken
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Vacuum leak, jammed IACV or something random like timing spring to mind. Is it doing it hot, cold or both? Any codes?

Thanks
Problem only started this morning
Cold and 1/2 warmed up (drove it about 3 km to see if prob would disappear)
Will check codes
Power seemed normal (ie timing belt ok)
Replaced cambelt tensioner etc about 10,000km ago
Will keep everyone updated

How many k's wax idle units do crap out.
Clean out throttle body idle bypass ports.
Needs tune up?

There is no choke on 4AFE ;).
Most likely stuck idle control valve. Should be attached to the bottom of the throttle body, gray/tan "box" with 3 wire plug. To attempt to clean it soak it in carb cleaner by spraying into the hole (about 6-8mm) in front of the throttle body.

The hole is visible on this pic (as well as the valve body itself):

There is another hole on the top (inside of the throttle body mouth), it is for idle screw adjustment (if you have it), you could also attempt cleaning that, but generally it only should be used to adjust idle on hot.

Finally updating this thread,
Yep - cleaner down the idle air valve hole did the trick
Took a bit of fiddling around i.e. spray cleaner, start engine with some throttle (because it won't idle),
about 2000rpm then close throttle to make it suck through idle valve,
engine stops, repeat until it idles
Thanks for everyone's input
Ken

Thanks for reply with the fix.
