Some turbos (aircraft turbochargers, Subaru WRC cars I think as well) are designed with their own oil reservoir so that they can be mounted with the shaft vertical. However, I believe the rule of thumb with 99% of automotive turbos is that the oil drain needs to be within 35° of vertical, otherwise you run into flow (lubrication and heat) and internal leakage issues. What did you have in mind?
