Got a manual Rav4?

After some info about the gearboxes in a rav4. I have heard they have E-series boxes, and someone told me they come in both wide and narrow E-Series ( i dont quite believe this, but I need to be sure), so I need to figure out what models have what so I know which gearbox to steal the final drive from. Interwebs seems to be full of conflicting info so i'm not keen on taking a $400 punt on getting the right gearbox/ordering the wrong parts.

If you have a manual Rav4 can you:
Get the full trans code off the chassis plate, and if it says E250 (or anything starting with E):
1)write down the full trans code eg E350F-06A. Or better yet, take a pic of the chassis plate.
2)Check whether the end cover on the gearbox is a black pressed steel cover (like shown below) or a cast Ali end cover.

3)Note year and spec of rav4 eg 1996 RAV4 L 3sfe 2wd.
4) Tell me what revs you are pulling in fourth and fifth at 100kph, and tyre size so I can work out overall gear ratio. If you can tell me what speed you are doing at say 3000rpm in each gear that would be super awesome and allow me to confirm the info below is right or not.

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to spare 10 mins to help out.

These are the supposed ratios I expect to be found based on various internet sources.
1995 - 2000
E250/E250F
1st (3.833); 2nd (1.913); 3rd (1.258); 4th (0.918) 5th (0.775) Final Drive 4.93 ?

2001 onwards (final drive= 4.235 (2wd) or 4.562(4wd)?)
E352F 3.833 2.045 1.333 1.028 0.820
E359F 3.833 1.913 1.258 0.972 0.775
E350 3.538 2.045 1.333 0.972 0.731
E351 3.538 2.045 1.333 0.972 0.731 (same as e350?)

He bought a rav4 gearbox off me for the final drive ratio for his 4wd corolla racecar (RIP)
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

E250F is the box commonly found in the mid/late 90's rav4's, they are known for spinning the spline out of the centre of the 5th gear cogs.
they come std with either a open/lockable transfer box, and some have a viscous centre diff.

I had no issues putting 270AHWP to the ground through one, but I'm not harsh on gearboxes

and the E250's are narrow cog, and i've never seen a ACA20 shape with a Manual box in it but if they are anything like other toyota gearboxes built in the 2000's they certainly wont have the strength of gearboxes from years gone by.

I'm hoping for a bit more power (we'll see how that goes), and rear wheels only..
Did you run the E250 or did you xfer the final drive to another box?
Do you remember/know what the final drive ratio was?

And I have to ask.. what were you doing with a rav4 box in the first place Ken?

the final drive/diff/crown wheel & pinion ratios in them is 4.93:1 with 4wd and alot of power, the acceleration is fun factor awesome, and my rx7 doesn't come close to having the pick up the corolla had, am certainly looking fowards to having a 4wd going again later this year.
the transfer cases dont seem to handle being run in rwd for too much.

I wont be using a transfer case, its an mr2, so I'll just rip the output shaft and crown wheel out and pay somebody to transfer them into an E56. Do you know if it was the input or the output shaft they were stripping 5th gear off, or was the shaft escaping undamaged?

the strip them on the shaft which has the 'pinion' cog machined into it.
I'm pretty sure you cant do what you are hoping to do, you will need to find a 2wd rav4 box to do it with. As the offset of the 'pinion' and crown wheel in the E250F box is different to what it is in a 2wd E55/56/58 type box, As I looked at trying to put a E58? (narrow cog fwd) LSD diff with a E250F guts into a gearbox and I couldn't figure out anyway of being any to make it happen.

Right, so thanks to the wayback machine, i found more info. Looks like the 2wd (sxa15/16) is a 4.562 Diff ratio. However it does look like the 2wd and 4wd boxes are the same basic design and the bits shoudl be swappable, several 4wd boxes use the 4.562 final drive (including the 2000-2005 rav4) and the part numbers are identical to the 2wd rav4.

strx7, thoughts on how long a fulltime 4wd 90's rav4 gearbox would last if the rear most drive shaft "fell out"? :lol: Would it die pretty quick with all the power going to the front?

How long does it take to drop a rav4 motor and 4wd box? Just noticed one has appeared at pick-a-part if their stock list is to be trusted. $100 is a gamble i'm willing to take on the bits fitting the E56 box.
