More brake noises! Yay!

Postby Ismart120 » Thu Jul 24, 2014 12:39 am

Not..

Ok, having had my rotors machined (yes yes I know...) about 1/6 weeks month ago, I have the issue that the left front is rubbing again when driving along and giving a pulsing feel when braking (mainly when braking lightly).

So, going to get it done properly and replace the front rotors.

Has anyone used/know anything about these on trademe?

If its not recommended, I'll try and get some genuine toyota ones.

It has new toyota pads all around too, which are closer to 4 weeks old, worth replacing these at the same time as new rotors or will I be ok? Being a student with limited car funds I'd be pleased if I didn't have to splash out on new ones again quite so soon.

Thanks

Are you doing the work yourself?
Are you cleaning the face of the hub when you are changing the rotors?
Are you doing the wheel nuts up in the right order with a torque wrench?
Are the calipers sliding freely on the pins?

Replacing rotors has nothing to do with a proper or improper job unless they've been chewed half way through from alot of metal-to-metal, or their machining was improper/incompetent and they won't do it again because they say that the lawyers say it's too thin or that .009in/.22mm run-out is within specs!

Basically, no. For the time and money, I'll take it into my local shop for them to do well and correctly the first time - mainly I don't have the gear or knowledge to do it confidently. Mainly the gear.

And yeah, I have my reservations regarding the work but its more that its likely an older rotor that may just now be prone to warping.

I'll double check its not just something dumb like a little brake dust or a small stone but would be interested in whats put there for when I do end up replacing them.

If you keep paying people to do average work on your car, you'll be out of pocket and still dealing with half fixes.

In the alternative, you could spend some time researching it/ asking questions on here/ spending the dosh on tools and parts...... you'll also know how to fix it next time round and you'll already have tools to do the work - hence the cost will just be your time and parts!

Its actually a very simple job - more so if you are planning to just replace everything. I would be surpised if you cannot get the tools for the same price (if not cheaper) than what a mechanic will charge you (/and the headache when its cocked up again.....)
