4AGE turbo ignition

Postby Vertigo » Mon Jul 21, 2014 3:16 pm

My hunch is that Id need to get some hotter plugs. What about 4AGZE plugs, would they do?

Sorry, after reading, seems Id need colder plugs, with smaller gap.

I'm still running the factory plugs for my 20v turbo. We just gapped them down to something around .8mm and it's running fine

"My hunch"?
What's in it now and wadda they look like now and what was the engine doing(symptoms and conditions) before you looked at them?
What's the compression? Don't chase a fuel or timing(ignition and/or cam) problem with iridium spark plugs.

There are an amazing number of sparkplugs for a limited number of conditions, they just have to be hot enough to not load up with carbon/short out/miss when the engine is idling and also cold enough to not melt/chip/crack/break/miss when the engine is under a load/WOT/accelerating, and they have to last a while before replacement or filing/re-gapping.
Also, there is a lot of advertising bullshit about multiple ground electrodes/straps and copper that should be ignored as deceptive advertising at the least, but is really illegal criminal fraud IMO.

pk20r8 is what a 3sgte uses standard, maybe a good start?

Find some some one with a trade account and buy your plugs through Toyota, Denso plugs have a max of 30+ retail.

Speaking of ignition, thought Id expand my post a bit.

Ive got a pair of GZE coil packs and a CAS. I will be getting an ECU of some kind obviously, either MS, link, or whathaveyou. Ive been told I might need a Mitsi igniter, but is this the case, or can I get away with controlling the coils directly with an ECU? Would make things a bit more simple. What should I do?

It will depend on the ecu you end up running. For example MS has inbuilt igniters if you go down that route however I prefer Links which require external igniters.

To run wasted spark you will need a dual channel igniter - either a stock Mitsi one or even two single channel igniters as long as they're 'dumb' igniters as the dwell will be controlled by the ecu. I've got a Link dual channel ignitor for sale if you need one. I've had GZE coils in setups in the past and they work fine but I have had a few die. The mitsi ones work well as an alternative and are easy to find. Or what you could do is run 2zzge coil on plugs with inbuilt ignitors and just pair to run as wasted spark if that's all your ecu is capable of running. I've run this in a fair few customers cars with good results (both wasted and individually driven).

You'll also need to consider that if your original tacho ran from a single coil (ie high level drive) you will need to think about how you will drive the tacho from the new setup. If your going for wasted spark, try to find a mitsi tacho interface which is a neat solution that combines the coil- pulses from each coil so your tacho runs normally. You can also make a tacho interface from resistors if you can't find an interface.
If you can, run the tacho direct from the ecu (with Links this works well) but you will need to change the internal resistor inside the tacho to a 1ohm unit (its very easy to do) so that it will run from a low level drive.
