How to prove car not airbag optioned?

Postby Linesy » Fri Jan 09, 2015 10:11 pm

I've got a Ae101 Trueno that I picked up for loose change, threw a spare engine in and have been using for clubsport while I got my AE92 ready.
The car came with a random steering wheel fitted that came off an airbag car (had deployed) as someone swiped the racing type wheel that was fitted.
Anyway my lad was having troubles with his Commodore so I suggested he run the Trueno down for a WOF to get it on the road to use.

Car is remarkably good & only needed a stone chip fixed in screen and a seatbelt BUT also did not pass due to airbag having deployed.
Now this wheel did not come off this car but hard to tell import Mechanic at VTNZ that.

Is there anyway to tell via vin etc if airbag was not fitted???

Any help would be greatly appreciated to sort this.

Cheers

If you fire through the full frame number and model code to me I should be able to confirm that for you in writing

If it has SRS it would probably be written on the sunvisor.

It would be logical to expect that if you go for a warrant with a air bag steering wheel with no bag in it,
that it would fail,

but if you went with a steering wheel that never had an airbag it would have probably passed,

as apart from the sunvisor how else does the warrant guy know if it has one or not?

but if you went with a steering wheel that never had an airbag it would have probably passed, Agreed - wouldn't be an issue - but haven't got one and he whipped it in on New Years Eve

Surely the lack of a dash airbag warning light would? Lack of fuse?

AE101 and early AE111 (amongst a heap of other cars) had mechanical airbags where there is no electronic side to the airbag setup so they had no light or fuse as theres no ECU.

Haven't struck it much lately but use to semi-regularly take calls from garages or people on the matter with WOF's on those cars. Would have an airbag wheel but no airbag light for the system check.

Big thanks to Mark for the support on this.

As it turns out this was a complete non event, get the right guy that knows the rules and it's easy.
Seems once a car is over 20yrs old airbags can be freely removed etc, so got the new wof piece of cake.

Thought the detail may help some one.

You mean you found a guy that doesn't know the rules and it was a non-event. The rules are pretty clear, removal of airbags always requires a LVV cert, unless done for law enforcement or emergency services vehicles. Of course that doesn't apply if the car didn't have airbags when it left the factory.

Note 2

Some modifications are permitted, but they must always be LVV certified. The only modifications permitted are:

1. fitting a switch to render an airbag temporarily inoperable, and

2. the removal or permanent deactivation of an airbag in a vehicle that:

is at least 14 years old, or
has been adapted for a person with a disability, or
has been extensively modified for motorsport use.
Reality: A nasty hallucination that is caused by excess blood in the alcohol stream.

I just read a newsletter that advises they are changing the rules around airbags on older vehicles.

Interesting, because so far as I'm aware LVVTA (where I work) isn't aware of this upcoming change.

(which is not to say that NZTA hasn't started something without telling us, heh)

Well that is interesting, chap doing the recheck didn't make the decision in isolation.Went away with my story around the history of the car, discussed with others at the branch (assume even the boss) and came back claiming no drama - isn't an issue on vehicles over 20 yrs old. Bearing in mind this was not at a backyard estabishment!

Was certainly though on the rechecking of the other small items (seatbelt, windscreen etc) and issued the wof.

Feel like I've pulled the top off a can of worms............
