AE92 Vs AE101 for Clubsport

Postby Linesy » Wed Oct 22, 2014 9:38 pm

Hi Team,

I am new to the toyota game and not really up to speed with all thats good etc for each model.
Short story is I have an AE92 FXGT & an AE101 Trueno (Superstrut) parked in the shed to choose between to develop into a Clubsport car.

The trouble is I don't really know what car will be best to develop long term and hang onto, Is there any one amongst you all that has experience with them both or could perhaps lend an educated opinion on which way to go?

Thanks

The simplicity of McPherson strut vs SS would be enough to sway me to the AE92. Much easier to modify/upgrade, and if the AE92 is a smallport one, its a bloody good base

OMG so shiny!

In saying that though Brad it wouldn't take much to convert the AE101 to macpherson strut if he wanted to? Least it has larger brakes which would help (just add good fluid and pads).

Which one weighs less. I reckon that might be the deciding factor!

Have asked myself the weight question, but when consider ing power diff and the weight diff (1020 vs 1110?) the 101 wins in the power to weight ratio. What ever car gets the nod will be getting gutted.

However I should add even though both would make tidy runabouts I'd be happy to swap bits around between them if that was helpful, ie should I put the 20v in the 92? Is the S/S - mac strut conversion easy?

The AE92 is not a small port unfortunately, it is bigport TVIS. However the motor is out as run a big end and was thinking of using a spare 20v bottom end i got with one of the cars (been freshned).

Sorry for all the questions guys, but I've got to say it's an interesting wee project compared to what I'm used to - Toranas, HQ's etc.

Cheers

I would base my decision on
- rust (AE92's can have bad rust in base of the A pillar in the cavities next to the footwell)
- spare panels and parts (biggest number of panels will be for the AE101)
- strength/safety (AE101 stronger than AE92)

Superstrut -easy option to bolt in macpherson strut subframe, some fiddling needed for steering arms and fitting the big brakes to non superstrut hubs but easily possible if you do some research

AE92 might be a bit lighter but AE101 20v 4age is faster than earlier 4ages (if unmodified)

Good luck
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Also AE101 should have a better aftermarket performance upgrade support seeing as lot of AE111 mechanical bits can be used

Personally I'd go with the AE92 FX-GT, will be alot more suited to the tighter stuff (motorkhana/sprint obstacles), and should have enough power for the longer sections.

Are either of them drivable? Theres always the option to bring each one out and see which you like better.

I'd take the AE92 given the choice. IMHO they are a slightly better platform than the AE101. the weight may be the factor but to me AE92's just seem to handle that little bit better than AE101's do.

I agree ae92 are the better platform. By the time you put a cage in it they are strong enough.

Only issue with the ae92s is trying to fit a 200wide slick on the rear. This can be overcome by changing to the Ae101/ae111 shocks which have more offset from the hub.

Ae92 with a blacktop and some good bilsteins is an easy 1.22 around manfield. Don't be afraid of making the suspension too stiff

Thanks guys.

Interesting I thought the 101 might get the consensus nod.

Tyler, that is actually the plan, hope to have the fx at the november round, should give me a reasonable comparison.
I did the event last sunday in the 101 - was better than the torana lol!

Cheers fellas.

Well, I've now had a crack in both cars and I quess at this point my preference is the AE92.
The fact I had new Semi Slicks on is definetly a factor in the sprints but in Motorkhana I run exactly the same trres.
Car seems to rotate faster on the handbrake and feels a little more settled in the sprints too. Jury is still out on the grunt, think I preferred the 20v.

Thought I would share incase anyone else has similar interests.

Good to see how you're getting along. It's a win win situation really, both cars are up to the task of being fun to throw around. 8)

I love my AE92 to bits, I've been racing it for most of the last 11 years (I sold it and bought it back again in the middle of that ownership).

Mind you, I've been running a silvertop in it for about 10 of those years, courtesy of a run bearing in the old 16 valve.

How do you rate the 20v over the 16v? I have a spare 20v and was thinking that it might make a interesting winter project.
Given you have real world comparison in the same chassis i'd be keen on your thoughts....

Silvertop all the way.

It was worth 10kph extra top speed down every straight at Manfeild compared to the old big port.

Blacktop's are way better though, but fragile unless you rebuild with silvertop rods.

I'm a fan of the AE92.. Get the liftback for maximum styles......

Mines got a 20v blacktop, c160 6-speed LSD box, Tein flex suspension (rock hard), whiteline rear sway bar, Achilles 123s, yellowstuff brake pads.

One interesting thing we have found between the 92 & 101 is the ability of the power steering to keep up.
The 101 tends to have issues keeping up with the change in direction and binding up, where as the 92 is pretty good.

Seems the 92's won this comparison overall.

I think you are answering your own questions really haha.

The biggest thing is the rust factor in AE92's, If Leon's one wasnt garaged he would be racing a cheese grater by now, As long as there is no current rust and you keep it garaged etc then it will last for years.
I had an AE92 FXGT with a smallport 4age and it was not much more than a standard road car with a roll cage and aftermarket plate LSD, Did lots of years with it, started out in clubsport stuff and progressed to gravel sprints and rallies, Very capable cars, I managed a few 1st 2nd 3rd in classes at sprints against newer cars.
