We have had a HEAP of issues with the internal wastegate actuator on my mates SR20 one though, one of the reasons I didn't have much issue with recommending an externally gated one for your 4AGE as the turbo itself has been a weapon - its hit around 300kw on E85 with it WANTING to run more due to the actuator, its hit near 2bar at just over 3000rpm on the SR! Not many <$1000 turbos will do 300kw and spool better than the stock T28, let alone also be reliable :)

Is that the red S14? Holycrapingmoly that's impressive! Would he run that on the track though, or is it more of a 'what can it do' type thing?

Yeah it was, and it was more of a "we can't actually make it run less boost because the wastegate isn't working properly" kind of thing, lol. Here's a dyno pull when I was trying to get to grips with things before we realised it was an actual physical issue making it hard to get a stable curve peaking at just over 20psi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmXClMPocqM

Initially I thought I was just having a dumb day until we realised the boost control was getting worse and worse and started actually pretty much free boosting even with the Link boost control turning off - which is how he ended up seeing near 2bar. Apparently it kicked like a mule before the MAP limit kicked in hahaha. Going by the fact that we have never struggled to raise boost, and it's always picked up power in consistent steps when it has run more boost.... if the fuel system and engine internal strength weren't of concern I have no doubt it would go over 300kw fairly happily on E85.

For what it's worth, the boost control issues seem to have come down to the diaphragm not being a perfect fit to the nice billet canister and it can actually end up lifting the edge and creating a leak and causing erratic boost - if not actually fully breaking free and giving nice free boost situations. Adrian made up some o-rings to try and pin the thing down and it seems to be working ok so far.

When it IS doing what it's told he normally runs it at around 16-17psi and it's normally well quick on that boost level, though it has been raced on 18psi-19psi occasionally, probably makes in the area of 280kw on that boost level... but it doesn't make enough difference to justify the extra strain on the engine etc, it hits near 210kph on the straights at Manfeild even on around 17psi and the last time he flicked the high boost switch it completely smashed 3rd gear mid way through a gear on full load. Oops.

FYI, my S13 isn't graced with an engine at all

Haha, should probably look into that.

Impressive stuff! Does he not want to move to an external wastegate?

I have my mind set on a 1JZGTE VVTi engine for my S13, but the SR20 is still hanging in there as a possibility. Especially with these numbers.

He would love one, but its time and money not factored in and I am sure knowing now how it all turned out he wished he did but one hopes that the thing would have worked properly :(

Blargh people putting Toyota stuff in Nissans when Nissan have awesome motors in the first place grinds my gears :P Good motor, though - I do like that the VVTi motor has a lot of cam angle control... the 1J would be a heap of fun :) The SR20 can't be underestimated though, pretty light, tough enough to push a light nimble chassis around well enough to be a heap of fun. If I was doing an S-chassis I'd totally be putting a high comp SR20 (or even 22?) VET setup in it, a good turbo and flex fuel (E85 is definitely a good amount of the reason for the results above).

A well matched and tuned setup can go a long way.

Yep there is always the debate for keeping it within the family, but it doesn't worry me, I'm just choosing an engine I like and putting it into a good chassis.

It was going to be an FD3S with 1JZ but I soon found that there wouldn't be enough headroom with a helmet, which was an unfortunate deal breaker.

Plenty of RB conversions around to keep your gears in check

EDIT: I did look into the VET idea but the cost of building one versus bolt on's for a 1JZ just doesn't fit the budget.

My gears aren't really that sensitive :)

You can start with an SR20 though, and work up - getting to the SR point in the first place is going to cost a lot less :)

I potentially know of a cheap SR20VE if you want to tread that path...
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

fck, why do you have to go say something like that?! ...still the cost of machining and building etc versus a stock VVTI 1JZ...

Yep could start with an SR20DET but plan on it being road legal, and the body is factory CA18DET so would need to cert twice if I started with an SR20.

That is true, I originally took this as starting with an SR20 then swapping to the 1JZ, but I now see you must have meant SR20DET > SR20VET.

I wonder how much a decent build of an SR20VET would actually be? I'd have to upgrade rods and pistons while in there... which would be a sooo much more expensive than an unopened 1JZ.

"Have to" VE head would flow enough more to justify not doing pistons
