Orange Canister next to fuel filter AE101

What is this little canister for and is it required?

There was a question from other member regarding fuel smell... , it looks like you have NZ new car (as far as I know they didn't come with many emission control items) and this is a fuel tank breather.

Yea it is NZ new, no issues it was more out of curiosity than anything. I thought that's what it might be thanks.

So how does this work?
Does it terminate at the canister or plumb elsewhere?

I wouldn't mind changing my setup to something newer and more compact.

It simply vents it into atmosphere, unlike the charcoal canister absorbing the vapour and then releasing when the engine is running into intake.

Quite often they vent into the chassis leg

That's right! they go in the hole in the chassis rail.
On side note the NZ New cars that lack oxygen sensor also have an adjuster near left strut tower (black pot with 3 or 4 wires coming of it).
I assume that is the mixture adjuster.
