96 Toyota Galanza heater no go

Postby fx gt » Thu Jul 02, 2015 1:25 pm

Hi guys

I have a factory turbo 1996 Galanza

I recently noticed the heater fuse was corroded so I replaced it. Now that it's cold I have started using the heater but it only blows mildly warm air. The temp gauge never really reads hot half way on the gauge. When I give it some gas and start boosting the gauge temperature goes down

Common problem?

Cheers :D

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck open. It will be constantly circulating water through the radiator cooling it too much. Or the temp sensor on the engine isn't working properly.

Are you saying your gauge reads half way then goes down or never gets to half way?

It never really gets to half way and if it does it drops real quick

Yeah sounds like a stuffed thermostat, it sounds jammed open and when you give it revs or drive quickly it will just make the temp drop as its cooling too well haha

Thanks guys!

Where is the temp sensor located? I should check that as well.

On the back of the head under the distributor.

May not be exactly correct for your car.

It's probably not your sensor because you have clarified it never gets to half temperature on the gauge. Change there thermostat and it should go back to running properly and having a hot heater.

Also note that the heater core might be full of crud.

I had that issue with a Starlet I bought off a friend who had run it for years without antifreeze. I replaced the radiator, but the heater was getting so little water actually through it, that the heater would merely waft slightly above room temp air around.

if flushing heater core dont use of much pressure easy to over pressure heater core especially if blocked. mate learnt the hard way last week.
use genuine thermostat if u can wait until monday, many ppl have issue with aftermarket ones, on good note ur fuel economy should be way better after u swap thermsostat

Yup, I've had a bunch of rubbish Repco thermostats.

Now I'll only use Toyota genuine. Most recently, yesterday, into a Starlet, and it is brilliant. Car warms up immediately, stays warm, and the idle drops down. Unlike before when it did none of those things.
