Im looking for a good panel beater/painter in Wellington???

Postby Mr Ree » Mon Nov 23, 2015 9:36 am

Hi TS'ers :)

My trusty Camry wagon needs some rust work done on the roof, so Ive been looking for a trustworthy person to do the work.

Every time I have had any panel/paint work done on any of my cars, I have always been left unhappy with either the quality of the job, or the honesty/attitude of the staff. I was just wondering if any of you have any recommendations for me?

Thanks alot :)

Recently had some prep/paint done at Pacific Dent removal down in Alicetown. Did a pretty decent job.

Yeah... I had a couple of insurance jobs done by August Panel & Spray Ltd in Petone.
Professional setup and did good work on company cars. Don't know how they would go
on rust repairs, but no harm in asking.

How big are the rust repairs? I have talked with Sean @ Pacific Dent Removal with regards to a project I've just purchased which will need extensive rust repairs and like any job, an evaluation would need to be undertaken to establish if they can take on the job.

I am a little concerned with my project that as they are a shop without a car hoist, that they may be limited in what they can take on. That is not to say they are without skill, but my project may need chassis rail replacement or extensive rust repair undertaken. Sean has indicated interest in my restoration project, but until we see the car up close, then it's just talk at this stage.

Smaller jobs I reckon they could handle with ease as would most panel beaters.

Its not major by any means. There is some rust at the top corner of the windscreen which I presume the screen will need to be removed to deal with, then ai have some small spots around the rearmost windows which again could need the glass removed for, then just a small amount of surface rust spots over the roof which I would be silly to not get ground back and sprayed while the rest is getting done.

I have owned my car for 10+ years and maintained it very well so I know it has an easy 10/15 years left in her if l get this rust sorted, and as such, I cant bring myself to sell it and buy something new.

Sometimes removing the window will open up a can of worms. The surrounds can rust out without you knowing. Either way the windows probably have to come out if you think they do.

That is a good point, and something I actually hadnt really considered. I guess I could try and have it repaired without removing the screen, but I would have to let the panel beater have a good look and give me his honest opinion.

If I could keep all the glass in and have the rust cut out as is, that would be so much cheaper/easier :)

Best thing to do is call and ask questions, or book the car in for an evaluation and let them provide options / next steps.

Absolutely agree with you there DeeCee :)

There is just a serious shortage of places in my area who I would be willing to let work on it, hence the thread.

I was just being hopeful that a member on here would have good things to say about a specific panel beater, but it seems they are like rocking horse poo to find lol

Ill have to go for a drive out to petone/hutt valley next week and take it to a few places for assessment/quote.
