Caldina GTT fuelling issue?

Postby Technohedge » Mon Jul 11, 2016 9:28 pm

Hey guys, so today I failed to start the GTT this morning. Sorta fired then died immediately. Then it just cranked and nothing.

Had a look at it tonight and was in process of ruling out what it could be, so i loosened the fuel line on top of the filter a little to see if fuel would squirt out when i cranked it.

As i loosened the nut, there was a couple seconds pause, then a small squirt of fuel from the filter, almost as if i had released some air pressure ad the fuel ran back up the hose.

Anyway i cranked it and fuel was being pumped, but lo an behold she just started! So i did up the nut again ad let her warm up.

After a initial blast of grey smoke it settled, then after a few minutes i got a lot of whitish smoke (this car never smokes, even when cold). Had me worried for a minute

Took it for a drive and now its running as normal with no smoke at all.

Any idea what may have caused this? sounds like some sort of vapor lock issue but the more experienced of you may be able to shed some light. It was only sitting for a day between running and failing to start.

be interesting to see if it starts tomorrow!

Thanks

Check valve on fuel pump dying.

Are these integrated with the pump or easily serviceable?

Part of the fuel pump. The valve fails and you lose rail pressure when you turn the car off. The car will start but you will have to crank for a while from dead cold while it builds fuel pressure. Hot starts when you are driving about town won't be a problem because the rail pressure won't have dropped enough to be a problem.

This is what it sounds like to me anyway.

Yeah makes sense. Any idea what would cause the white smoke to appear (seemed to be running for a couple of minutes before this appeared) and then disappear after a run?

White smoke or water condensate?
White-blue smoke on start up is worn valve stem seals. Water condensate ("vapour") is normal.

was hard to tell exactly as it was dark.

Kicked out a cloud of black smoke on startup and then as it warmed seemed like a lot of whitish smoke. Got worse after a couple of minutes then disappeared never to return after a short drive down the road. This car NEVER smokes even on startup

Black smoke: fuel. If fuel is still liquid you get white/blueish smoke.
