1GFE Idle Speed

Postby Boosted_162 » Wed Aug 24, 2016 8:15 am

Hey guys,

The 1GFE in my Altezza runs well, but has a high warm idle. When you start it in the cold, it sits at 900-1000 (possibly too low?) but when I come to a stop when the car is warm it will sit at 1200-1300. I have no experience with 1G's, is there any common issues with the idle or has someone messed with it to compensate for a vacuum leak or something? It idles nice and smooth, just a little high.

Oh and if anyone knows the standard plug gap that would be helpful, the one I pulled seemed to be gapped way too big

Cheers

Sounds like the IACV is gummed up and seized.
It'll be stuck in the cold idle speed position and can't close off to give the correct hot idle

There should be a light green/light brown box on the throttle body with an oval plug and two phillips screws.
Carefully remove that, and you'll be able to see the end of the shaft for the IAVC 'butterfly'
It should turn easily and smoothly with your fingers.
If not, use throttle body cleaner etc and work the shaft by hand until it rotates freely

Reassemble carefully, making sure that the green/brown 'box' is 'centered' when you tighten it - ie: not touching the shaft and preventing it from turning.

It's most likely what edwagon said. I've done this on the MR2 as it had the same problems. Once the idle valve was clean it worked perfectly in any situation, until the power wire to the IACV broke. But that's another completely different issue.

Awesome, thanks for that! Got some cleaner, will pull the airbox on friday and get in and clean :D

5 point star shape?

You don't have to remove the green control unit but makes it far easier to clean out. You can just removed the valve off the throttle body and spray it with cleaner to clean it out. The other thing you could do is apply 12v to the centre pin and ground the outer pins alternately to move the valve.
