Guard Rolling on Celica GT Four - experiences

Postby DeeCee » Tue Sep 27, 2016 11:25 am

Hi all,

Anyone have any experiences with rolling the lip on the rear guards of a Celica ST185?

Am looking at guard rolling at the rear as the panel beaters didn't do it prior to painting (amazingly annoying/frustrating I know *sigh).
In discussions with the local GT Four club, the view is that the guard is very hard to roll due to 3 layers of sheet metal which make up the guard lip.

One method would be to cut slots between the spot welds to relieve the stress on the metal, roll the lip up then weld the sectioned pieces to restore panel strength in that area. Then seam seal and primer. And yes, I am resigned to the fact that I will need to wreck the new paint job and get it repaired after the fact :(

Let me know your experiences and thoughts.

Cheers Dave

Rolled the rear guard lips on my last SW20 with a rubber mallet and a heat gun. Heat the hell out of the paint, then flatten the rear lip up enough to clear. Didn't lose any paint. Took about 10 minutes each side taking care to heat the paint enough.
