blacktop rebuild

Postby themaleman » Sun Jan 08, 2017 9:53 pm

hi all,
i have purchased an ae111 to use the engine in my suzuki sj410.
the engine had a suspected blown head gasket, and upon opening it up we discovered it dosnt look like it was very well looked after. the head is filthy so i will remove the valves and i want to get it cleaned. where is the best place to take it?
i will be replacing all the seals and gaskets, trd head gasket, head bolts and most likely bearings. i am trying to avoid spending big bucks on it since it wont be daily driven on road. there is a mark in 1 of the cylinders that i am concerned about. what do you think?
ill be getting new spark plugs, leads, dizzy, knock sensor (they are all damaged).

Can you feel that groove with your fingernail?
Any engine reconditioner will be able to cold tank the head for you, not sure where you are though, so can't give a recommendation.

That cylinder looks like it has a bit of a ridge at the top of the bore. Do you
have any idea how many KM's the engine has done ?

Probably would be cheaper to buy another engine.

Things you can do to check without disassembly:

1) look for blackness under the cap (sludge = bad)
2) get $10 endoscope on ebay and inspect inside for scouring marks (just like the ones on your picture). The endoscope is just a USB camera that plugs into your smartphone or laptop.
3) look for corrosion in water pipes.

Saying that if engine is golden-brown inside (no blackness) then it most likely will not have other issues (except corrosion).

If a person did not bother with regular oil changes (sludge in the engine) it means they also skipped the coolant service.

A regularly serviced engine should look like this:

I have good condition silvertop block with black top pistons I was going to use for a big build but have gone with a 2ZZ. Also have a really good condition blacktop head and other bits.

On another note I am selling the engine I had assembled to go in which has a lot of bits in and on it. 7A sump, 280' cams, new oil pump with higher pressure spring, new water pump, new seals, new cambelt and tensioner, ST185 injectors (cleaned and flowed), ACL big end bearings etc etc

Give me a call if interested, keen to move the bits - 0276642757

Sorry for the late reply, and cheers for all the comments.
I took the head to a rebuild and straight away was told its toast, something to note is it has silvertop pistons ( yes nobody on here picked that up eaither lol) so I'm presuming it's a silvertop block.
I have since bought another engine. The head has done 170k kms and looks to b in much better condition. The original head on the engine dropped a valve and buggerd number 2 piston. For some reason the piston was replaced with a silvertop one, so I am going to take it to the rebuild to get it changed back to a blacktop piston. The block has done around 200k kms
