AE111 6 speed LSD recommendations?

Postby Ninja25t » Tue Oct 10, 2017 3:24 pm

The LSD in my AE111 has been on its way out for a while and now sounds like it is very close to expiring.

I have 2 non LSD 6 speed boxes as potential replacements and am looking to fit an aftermarket LSD to one of those.

My question is which aftermaket offering should I go for - TRD, Quaife, Cusco, Kaaz... others?

The vehicle is daily driven in Auckland traffic but gets track day use on a set of semi-slicks whenever I can. I'm willing to sacrifice some daily driveability (its already on adjustable suspension, heavy duty clutch etc.) but don't want excessive whining/clunking/reduction in steering lock etc.

Thoughts/comments (preferably from those with direct experience please!)?

For reference, yes I understand the 5 speed box is stronger, maybe faster(?), but I really like changing gears and don't have plans for more power in the medium term, plus I have 2 other 6 speed boxes to break/wear out first :-)

Thanks,
Shane

The Quaife ATB is a good LSD for all situations. No clunking, no wearing out. Works well for normal road driving and then great for the track.

I have run TRD plate diffs in my race starlet ( 'C' series box) and for racing are awesome, it does clunk and bang at very low speeds but at normal road speeds it's fine. I haven't daily driven it , but I have driven it to events a few hours away with no probs. I have heard good things about the torsen type diffs , the only thing I don't like is the fact they go open if you lift a wheel off the ground , this may or may not be an issue for you , but is worth thinking about when deciding which way to go.
My friend has a Cusco plate diff in his car and it has more and bigger plates than the TRD and seems to dive very nicely on the road , sorry I can't remember which model it is.
I hope this helps you with your decision :)

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.
