Turbo rebuild kits

So, the turbo I put on started making some noises I didnt like, and there seemed to be some minute shaft play, and I dont know its history, so better to just rebuild it now that everything works.

Where should I source good quality rebuild kits from? This is an EVO TD05HR.

Has an uprated thrust plate, and more likely to be quality than something from Trademe or Ebay.

The other option was Mitsi OEM parts, but i can imagine they would be rather pricey.

Just curious, how well does steel work as a bearing? Doesn't it start galling? Or is that only an issue where it's not lubricated properly? I see the stock and Stage II are brass.

I actually thought the Mitsi kits weren't too spendy. but it was a while back when I last looked

FWIW, some radial play in the shaft is perfectly normal. Axial, not so much.

Based on the questioning of steel thrust bearing here and elsewhere, Ive switched out to the stage 2 kit with brass thrust bearing with improved oil ports.

My question was put forward because I don't know. They wouldn't make it from steel if it didn't work but based on discussions with people who know more about metal types than me I thought I'd ask.

Its ok, it was more than your question that prompted me to do so From what I can deduce, the steel bearings are great, so long as lubrication is perfect, but fail easily if oiling is interrupted in any way. Would rather not risk it.
