Turbo spin at idle - resistance

Postby Vertigo » Thu Jan 04, 2018 8:46 am

Hi guys. Just recently rebuilt my turbo (TD05HR), and now its not spinning at idle. I can spin it by hand, but any tiny amount of sideways pressure on the shaft makes it bind up.

I tightened the shaft nut to 80 in-lbs, which was in the lower end of the 75-100 in-lbs spec stated online.

Have I $&#$% up? Or does it just need to wear in?

My JB China special that I bought a decade ago, didnt spin at idle when it was a fresh install, but for the past few years, it has spun at idle, and for quite a while upon shut down. I imagine yours just needs a few kms on it before it does the same :)

Perfectly normal for a fresh turbo. If you can still spin it by hand and it isn't obviously rubbing on either housing then I wouldn't worry.

Do turbos spin at idle?
Everyone seems to think they do?

Had another big discussion with the usual ricers wayyyy back.

Try asking on an American forum.
No of course they don't, it all depends on the idle speed.
Computers make you go mad.

I had a issue like this which resulted in a piston seal needing replaced.
There was a tiny bit of rust on the seal and that was enough to have the shaft bind up when at operating oil pressure.

I asked how to avoid this and was told to avoid rust enhancing conditions - moisture free environment. Is that even possible especially in this 85-95% humidity? :P This is why ii run my car every few weeks - dont like the thought of removing the turbo again!

Haven't driven yet due to camping trips and such, but will update after fixing another issue somewhat unrelated.

Drive successful, boosts just fine. Will do a few test drives, and then check the idle spin. But Im not worried now.

Many drives later, there have been zero problems. Its still very resistant to turn with sideways pressure, but I am confident to call it normal.
