No. They run small brakes because the rules dictated the rim size a long long time ago.
They will change the brakes given more room.
There is totally more relavance to road cars, when was the last time you saw a new Merc, Nissan or anything on 13" rims?

Re: 2014 Formula One
another awesome result for Mitch. Such a great drive, defending, passing and looking after the tires so well. 15th to 1st.
Bad luck for Hamilton. Almost want to see him win to wipe that smug grin off the germans face
But I rekon it will be Nico, Valtteri, Hamilton

Re: 2014 Formula One
Im so F'n happy right now
The win in Silverstone has clearly unlocked the potential everyone already knew was there, and if he could win this race freom the midpack, so convincingly like he did this morning, then there is no reason to believe he cant win the race tonight from 8th. His tyre management, and race craft was that of a future champion.
Just watching the GP3 race now so fingers crossed Stanaway can fight to the front
Very much looking forward to the F1 race tonight, which will lead straight into the first of two Indy car races tomorrow, due to it being cancelled due to rain this moring ...

Re: 2014 Formula One
Well the go kart track is upon us again, so it will be interesting to see how the pecking order shuffles around this weekend.
I would expect RBR to be very competitive, and the red cars to be slightly more competitive than at the faster tracks, but whether of not that leads to either of them being able to snatch points off Willams, which is their realistic target, will be telling, as once they come back from the summer break, there are ALOT of tracks that dont suit their cars inherent design flaws.
Also, Mitch is racing again, so lets hope he can take his third feature race win in a row, and climb up to 3rd in the standings

Not unless the current brakes have issues. Has the technology got to the point that they can go a full race distance on max attack late braking errywhere without fade/feel/life issues?
Bigger brakes are heavier.. and increasing weight and rotational inertia in the unsprung assembly has so many downsides they would absolutely avoid it if they could stick with current size brakes.
Reality: A nasty hallucination that is caused by excess blood in the alcohol stream.

Re: 2014 Formula One
Bigger diameter brakes = more leverage. So expect motorcycle type designs
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/10 ... rake-rotor
I'm sure they will explore all sorts of set ups

Re: 2014 Formula One
Again, is the existing hardware lacking in some way? Last race i watched I saw plenty of locked wheels... implies they have enough leverage already. Correct me if i'm wrong, but don't they have different ducts for the brakes to prevent overcooling on less brake intensive tracks as it is, which suggests that they can adequately cool the existing hardware.
So they are already going smaller where they can. And that comment about less torque requirements on the front would go against larger diameter brakes. But more stopping distance and more front bias might be reasons for going thicker if they aren't already at the limit.

Re: 2014 Formula One
Well we will see, I'm pretty sure they will have greater minds than ours looking into it
But the brakes are not running large safety margins, you do see over heating issues and failure. Although I guess a lot of that is trying to run less ducting as less is best for cooling ducts.
Going larger diameter means more leverage and also the ability for more swept area meaning better heat distribution needing less cooling, which means less ducting.
How much weight will it add? I don't know. Will it add any? I don't know, rotors maybe thinner and quite open in design. Where is the trade off between weight, heat and aero ducting? I don't know.
I'm not saying they definitely WILL go larger. But I think they will.

There is also the factor of what braking grip will there be with the 18" tyres?

Re: 2014 Formula One
So how far will Lewis, and to a lesser extent, Kimi, be able to fight their way through the field tonight? I still think Lewis can get into the top 5, fairly easily. He is starting from the pitlane so will avoid any potential first corner incidents, and should be able to pick off 1 car per lap until hes in the top ten, then things will get tougher when hes trying to out drag other Merc PU's down the straights.
It will be an eventful race, regardless, and will only take a poor start from Nico, for one of the others to snatch the lead into turn 1 and hold it until the end.

Re: 2014 Formula One
No one will be betting against Nico I think!
Lewis top 5 or crash.

Re: 2014 Formula One
So much for team orders Lewis lol..
I'd have told them where to go aswell.I'd have been saying to the team how bout soughting my car so I can compete on an even footing with Nico man Hamilton has to be a frustrated camper about now with regards to reliability. For me if given the even footing as mentioned there's no question who'd win this championship.

Yeah so far they are saying they are reviewing everything to make sure they were correct in asking him to move over.
Either way it must be getter weirder and weirder in that pit garage

Re: 2014 Formula One
That was one of the best races in ages, and there have been some crackers this year already. There was shit happening everywhere you looked
I dont think Merc were wrong in asking Lewis to let Nico pass, as they were on a different strategy. Its not like they were on the same strategy and he was asked to let Nico past, completely different story. Things go both ways so I hope for Lewis' sake, that they shoe isnt on the other foot later in the year as you can almost guarantee Nico will return the favour.
Either way, it adds alot of tension to an already tense season....now they can mull it over for 4 weeks before coming back to Spa.

Regardless of what you mentioned i don't think Lewis's mental state would be in that area of letting his team mate pass.... at all hahaha..

Re: 2014 Formula One
Lauda has come out and said he backs Lewis on that call.
Nico didn't get within DRS so sounds to me he wasn't close enough to warrant a "let me by"

Re: 2014 Formula One
Fell asleep 5 laps in and woke up with 10 to go. Dammit! Will re watch tonight.
Re: Lewis orders, I watched the sky post race stuff and they'd worked it out it would have been Nico 2nd and Lewis 4th if he had let him pasted. I think he did the right thing. If Nico was right on his tail then MAYBE let him by, but Nico was expecting him to really slow up to let him pass.
