Your demand for respects is on the same level as level crossing runners demanding respect from train drivers.
How about cyclist showing some respect to the drivers and not holding them up?

That what Nazis did when they got sanctioned. Too "bad" synth. diesel jellyfied easily in russian winters, otherwise they might had gotten further.
I see it this way: small electric for commuting (like vitz size, or even IQ size) recharged at night (preferably via Nuclear power) and petrol hybrids for going places is the future that minimises our dependence on oil greatly (there is plethora of thorium to run safe breeder reactors that will last us hundreds of years).
But NZ is nuke free. Whatever hippy decided that shot whole nation in the foot.

If all the humans in the world disappeared tomorrow, our nuclear reactors would melt down and poison the planet for hundreds of thousands of years.
That's the kind of stuff we are dealing with.
Synthetic oil and hydrogen
Anyway, I'm not trying to be a dick. I like cars too. It just irritates me when I see people moaning about traffic jams and cyclists.
More people on bikes + less commuting by car = more oil for fun stuff.

Back to auckland.... imo auckland has been designed badly, this spanning last 50 or so years. Not enough forsight and planning.
I remember seeing something on tv about the harbour bridge, shortly after, a counciller or mayor etc said that it wasnt going to be enough and they needed to plan for future expansion. Was laughed at, told he was talking nonsense. Shortly after that, they had to widen the bridge as a fix for the increased traffic.

Reactors don't just melt down by themselves.
There are also lots of natural uranium reactors.

1) The oil isn't running out. They're finding new reserves of the shit all the time.
2)New Zelaland's oil consumption is a minute drop in the ocean compared to the world's fastest growing automotive markets of China and India who are rapidly getting off their bikes and into cars. ( Why are they doing that? Well pretty simple really, driving is fun, independent, safe and comofortable, while riding a bicycle REALLY sucks ass.)

well on track to hit 2 million cars this year, just for 1 manufacturer in 1 country. Not even the biggest one, either. Add another couple of million for Volkswagen.
Yep bring on the cycleway, and get on that pushbike - one less car - you can really make a difference!

You guys who think Auckland's shit should try living overseas for a while. Auckland is like Paradise compared to Sydney. $18 for two hours parking at Bondi beach today then nearly 2 hours to drive back to Parramatta at 3pm! Worst thing about Auckland is lack of public transport but as far as driving goes if you're brought up there then it's very easy to get around.
Might want to read this before you think everything's hunky dory and do some research on peak oil.

I can confirm regarding Sydney. When I been there I hated it every single bit apart perhaps their train system. Although I expected them to be cheaper.

Completely agree with you. But that's because voters tend to be short sighted. Personally I don't care if rates go through the roof - as long as that money is spent wisely and it prevents us spending twice as much for a shoddy fix in 20 years time.
Re: the harbour bridge; it was originally designed to have 6 lanes, but scaled back to 4 for cost reasons. Within 5 years of opening the need for extra years was obvious and the clip-ons were ordered.
I was also told a short time ago that State Highway 1 was originally planned to run out west through where SH16 is, & down the north-western, bypassing the city. However some councilors thought it would be a good idea to re-route it via the harbour bridge so they could pay it off quicker. Good thinking guys.....
