Speaker "pop"

Ok then... experiencing some problems dammit.

I get a "pop" through my front speakers (amped) when I turn the head unit on, off, change tracks or when I press a few other buttons.

Checked the logical things: RCA's, earths on amp and head unit, speaker wires aren't shorting anywhere etc and everything checks out fine... however, it only does it when the LEFT FRONT RCA preout is connected at the h/u... otherwise it is fine. Doesn't make a pop when sub out or REAR RCA preouts are used.

Does this point to a h/u fault? Just would like to make certain before I go through the correct channels (no pun intended) to make a warranty claim.

it points to your amplifier - do a search - its been covered before

Definitely not the amplifier... switch to the rear preouts and the pop vanishes.... just wanted to make double sure it is a head unit fault.

Also the fact it does it when buttons are pressed on the head unit is a bit :S

what kind of amp is it? Im pretty sure it will be the amp, i had this same problem with my front speakers when i had a crappy little amp, but now ive got a better amp and it doesn't do it. amps have a feature called soft turn on/off or something along thoes lines, obviously yours doesn't.

It's a borrowed Rockford Fosgate P3001...... not a crappy amp by any means.

Has to be the h/u... tried a different amp today and it still does it.

if headunit, upgrade power wire and ground wire - make sure ground goes to chassis (bare metal).. what kind of headunit?

and thats the first time i've heard of a headunit making the pop.. check RCAs to ensure that none of them are contacting each other..

It can't be upgraded anymore unless I go to 8g power and earth for the h/u!!! No shorts in the RCA's either, been over those thoroughly with a meter several times now...

Was chatting to my friend who is in the final stages of an electrical engineering degree, he seems to think it is a problem with the output stage on the h/u.... either wa it's under warranty so we'll get her checked out tomorrow!

ATM the amp is getting it's signal from the rear preouts... no problems whatsoever, but it's just not right having it set up like that... it "feels" weird you know?

must be the headunit.. and your mate is right about the output transistor - though from the amps i have heard when the output transistor goes, the amp has a "whine" to it.. not a pop.

Amp pop is usually common if the amp is of a lesser build quality or does not have a silent turn on/off..

Headunits popping is 'interesting' to say the least.. as headunits generally do not "pop" on or off..

I would say to take the headunit out, grab a terminal strip and check in a mates car.. if the pop is there then you are absolutely certain that its the headunit and you can easily take it back under warrenty - in these cases, the place you purchased from will stick it on a test bench and it won't "pop".

If you need to prove to these people that it pops from car to car, then have you mate's car there with you - both with headunits loose for easy headunit transfers between the cars using terminal strips

best of luck - it should be no worries under warrenty
