Nic's Dummies guide to 4age'ing your RWD

Postby Trls250s » Wed Jan 30, 2008 7:57 pm

I posted this on Garagedori and thought it might be useful here as well

I decided after finishing up my conversion i would do a write up on the things you may need, and what to watch out for when doing a 4age conversion to a AE85 (proberly be able to apply the same thing to a DX/AE70 as well but factor in the need to change the engine mounts)

First off, dont get rid of your 3AU until your conversion is finished. You never know what you may need off it.

Parts off the 3AU you should consider are:
Waterpump
Thermostat housing
Engine mounts
Gearbox braces
Vaccum lines and water pipes (you may need to butcher up stuff to make your own)

Things you may need for your 4age:
Rear water sensor block
Ignitor coil
Injector resistor pack
Relays (i cant stress how important relays are unless you are paying someone else to wire up your car)
RWD alternator (if you are running a rwd waterpump)
*note: toyota quoted me $95.79 + GST for a rwd alternator bracket, this wasnt through mates or mr. revhead, this was just going down to my local toyota dealer and asking for it over the counter. When asking for this part, stipulate your car is a AE86 Levin or Trueno with a 4A-GEU engine as this bracket doesnt come off anything else*
Powersteering pump (if you really want)

Things you will need:
4age Loom
4age starter motor (get a 16valve one from a AE82 fxgt, as the coils are further away from your exhaust manifold)
Radiator fan
AE86 accelerator cable, or cable of similar length
RWD intake plenum
Wiring diagrams (PM me for the AE85 and AE86 wiring diagrams, i also have ones for the redtop smallport 4age as well)
4age flywheel
NEW Crank/Flywheel bolts (dont reuse the old ones as you can only use them twice before they need to be thrown away)
Ezy outs (for those nasty suprises)
A Drill
A Hammer
A Crowbar

Things to note when removing your 3AU:

If you are leaving your gearbox in your car, you will need to remove the exhast manifold from the head, to do this you will need to take off the intake manifold/carb.

If you have powersteering, remove the line directly in the middle of the rack, your sandwhich plate will catch on it and just make a mess of it. Its a tiny little bolt and it will take you 5 minutes, and save you a lot of pain and headscratching.

Remove your bumper and radiator, this takes 15 minutes and just makes life so much easier.

The exhaust manifold is also mounted to the gearbox, remove the bracket for easier removal.

Dont just cut wires off, everything has a plug, unplug it first as you dont know when you may need them later on.

Things to consider when installing your 4age:

Be patient

You will need a new accelerator cable as the 3AU one will not reach the front of the engine.

Sort out all your water lines before attaching unnessasary parts (alternator, waterpump, extractors)

Loop off your powersteering lines if you arnt going to use them. Before doing this though fill them with powersteering fluid and get them through the system. You wont want your steering rack siezing

Mount your ignitor/coil as far away from your exhaust manifold as you can, these suckers get hot enough by themselves.

make sure you have all the little fiddly stuff sorted out first before trying to put the engine loom in. Having a loom in the way while you mess around with an injector can be very annoying.

Try lable and mark out your loom before you install it so you know where everything goes.

If you are wiring up the loom yourself, you will need relays. There is a space in the fuse box for the EFI Main relay, if you can try to use that.

The EFI main relay controls your fuel pump to come on only when the engine is running. This can be bypassed and run so the fuel pump is running as soon as you turn the key.

You are also able to bypass the main relay for the injectors by doing the same thing. I advise you do one or the other tho as a safty precaution.

You will need a 14 pin plug to wire your ECU into your car loom.

Get shitty cheap spark plugs for when you first install the motor, your timing might be out massively, and whats the point in fowling a set of iridum platnium spark plugs when IGK champions are only $5 each.

Your 3AU starter motor is useless as soon as you put in your 4age, also the coils are in a place that makes them 'lean' against the extractors. For the same reason i dont recommend 20 valve starter motors

Oxygen Sensor:

I have just discovered the importance of an O2 sensor. After reading a bit of literature and the assistance of others here on the GD forum it seems as though it is fairly important for the ECU to draw accurate fuel maps from the O2 sensor.

Im currently having an issue with my car lacking intial torque as i dont have one.

I drove a fx-gt with the same engine with similar mods and it has just that little bit more get up and go then mine.

I have just purchased a aftermarket Walker Oxygen sensor. This was cheaper then a toyota specific one.

The walker single wire O2 sensors are the same on the Gen 1 3SGTE engines as the 4age ones.

Part number: 25021051

This is only for the Big Port Bluetop 4AGEU engine.

Also some information that can be helpful:

4age fireing order: 1-3-4-2
Timing: 16 degrees at 800 rpm or 10 degrees in diagnostics mode

Minds blank now but if you have any more detailed intelligent information on 4ages throw it here.

Also some links worth looking at:

Not 100% dude, did the reasearch a couple of weeks ago and once i found one i forgot everything else haha.

Google them and find out, they make a comprehensive list of O2 sensors for most engine types. Its commong if its hotwire (3 wire) one it will be similar/exactly the same as the gen 2 gen 3 3sgte.
