Gear puller - where to get one?

Postby pc » Tue May 20, 2008 1:38 pm

Does anyone know where to buy a flat legged gear puller in Wellington?
I am looking for something similar to the first one in this product catalogue

This is to get the 5th gear off a C52.

The pullers that Supercheap & Repco have are all too big.

I have a 3-legged gear puller you can borrow if it's what you want. Some parts of it are flat. :?

Tried a few options, all suck. :(
I asked a guy at Miles Udy what they do and he said they made a gear puller for getting the 5th gears off corolla boxes, and it exerts a stupid amount of force to get the gear off.

Does anyone have a method that can be used at home that doesn't break things?

Pete any chance of pressing it off with a press rather than using a gear puller?

i hanvent seen the internals of a FWD box so can only comment on how I did the T50 in the KE.

Used above method with metal plates under gear / bearing etc that I wanted to remove and worked well.

Obviously you have to have access to a press etc

Dunno about pressing it off. I guess the key problem is holding the gear or getting under it so to speak. If that can be done without breaking things, then a "puller" or a "pusher" will work.

best way i could pull the 5th gear off my c52's was to grind the legs of the puller flat on the bottom and tap into place under the gear. Then large pair of slip jaw pliers to hold the legs inwards when undoing the gear. It is a bit of a mongrel but tou can do it. Puller i used was a 2 leg type about 250mm long

Sounds like a good option. I did consider buying a 3 legged puller and grinding the legs flat... hopefully wont make the legs too weak.

You tried a bearing place??
Grinding the flat bits should be ok so long as you don't go extreme.
Can i ask what you did to make pulling said part out nescessary? Something to do with a stripped 4th gear set by any chance??

My mate has a a gearbox with the 5th popping out problem... replacing the syncro shift ring thingie is easy, but I will need the toothed ring thingie (I gotta learn the names of these parts) attached to 5th gear also, which means pulling the gear off. So I need a tool that I can take to Pick-a-Part and use on a gearbox up there.

Taking a gearbox into a tool shop to find the right tool is now impossible as the only spare junk 5 speed box I had, I have already pulled apart with mad hammer/crowbar/propane torch action, so I now know how tight these things are put together, but haven't got one to practice on any more.
